PEN FLASH-LIGHT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 26, 1916.
Application filed December 6, 1915. Serial No. 65,386.
To all 'whom it mm concern:
Be it known t at we, VILLIE Lnxzixow and Daconnnr Bi'mLnR, subjects of the mperor of Germany, and residents of New York, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pen Flash-Lights, of which the following is a specification.
This. invention relates to improvements in flash lights and particularly to apparatus for producing the same, whereby the rays are thrown directly upon a surface as in scri tions are made thereon.
T e principal object of the invention is t-i produce a small but powerful'light to be used as an attachment to fountain, stylographic or other pens, and ordinary pencils, without en'cumbering the same in an objectionable manner, the light being directed toward the point making the inscription and the entire device being self-contained.
Another object is to provide such means in forms that can be constructed at a moderate cost and which in no wise interferes or conflicts with the ordinary purpose of the article to which they are applied.
These and other objects, which 'will become apparent as the description progresses, are obtained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which:
Figure 1 is a general side elevation of a fountain pen, showing the attachment applied in operative position. Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmental sectional view of the same, showing the interior construction thereof, the light being in an extended position. Fig. 3 is a similar view to that shown in Fig. 2, with the light folded or in a position adapted to be carried in the pocket, and, Fig. 4 is a transverse sect onal view taken on line-4-1 of Fig. 2.
In the drawing an ordinary fountain pen 10, is provided with a cap 11 in the usual manner, the cap being adapted to be placed over the point as a protecting guard when the pen is not in use, or disposed over the opposite end of the pen when use is made of The cap 11 is merely a cylindrical tube, connected by, screw threads 12 with a supplementary cap 15, having an integrally formed end 16 and containing a battery cell 17 adapted to furnish current to the binding post 18, with which is engaged an insulated conductor 19, the same terminating in the bulb 20 arranged within the reflector 21, supported by an arm 22 which is pivoted at 23 to the clip bracket 21, secured as usual by the spring arms 25 to the exterior of the cap 15. Extending from the clip bracket 24, substantially parallel to the barrel of the pencil, is another arm 28 carrying a head 29 adapted to engage the pen within a pocket or other convenient object upon which it is desired to dispose of the pen. The lower end 30 of the arm 22 extends inwardly through the slot 31 formed in the cap 11 and has attached to it a sprin arm 33 adapted, when the arm 22 is raised perpendicular to the barrel of the mm to make contact with the bar 35, which orms the other terminal of the battery 17. "When the light is not desired the arm 22, together with the reflector and the bulb carried therein, is turned to lie closely adjacentand parallel with the cap 11 at whichever end' of the pen the cap may be placed. If it be desired to make use of the light the arm 22 is raised horizontally, as shown, whereupon an electrical connection is formed through the contacting elements 19, 33, and 35, causing the light to glow as clearly indicated in Fig. 1.
It is to be understood that the clip 24 and clamp arm'28 is not claimed as part of the invention, use being made of it merely as a supporting means for the light element pivoted to it as indicated.
Having thus described our invention and ascertained the manner of its construction and use, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a cap suited to be engaged upon either end of a fountain en, of an electric battery containedin sai cap, a reflector and electric light bulb adapted-to be raised above the cap. and direct rays toward the pen point, and also adapted to be folded closely adjacent to the cap, and means connecting the light bulb to the battery when in a raised position, and disconnecting it therefromwhen in a lowered position. i
