Be it known that I, l'VILiiinD G. SLAeLn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, Shelby county and State of Tennessee, have invented andy discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Purihers for Laundry Drying Machines, of which the following is a specification.

In the operation of laundry tumbling machines, or drying machines for laundries, the operation results in removing' lint from the goeds, which, in machines as heretofore. constructed, is thrown off with the air. rIlie blowing of air from such tumbling machines to the outside is very objectionable and, when confined within a room, renders such room almost uninhabitable.

The object of my said invention is to provide an improvement in laundry tumbling, or drying, machines, whereby the objections above mentioned will be overcome, all as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring to the accoi'npanying drawings which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure l is a view showing'tlie upper portion of a tumbling machine with my attachment in vertical section, and Fig. a cross-section thereof on the dotted line 2 2 in Fig. l.

In said drawings, the portions marked A represent a portion of the casing of a tuinbling or drying machine, B the airl exhaust pipe leading therefrom, and u an air straining screen interposed in the passage for the air through said pipe, designed especially for collecting the lint or straining the air.

The tumbling machine A is, or may be, of any approved construction wherein the clothes are deposited and tumbled by means of a reel or other appropriate devices (not shown), while hot air is forced through said machine.

The air exhaust pipe B is of appropriate size, leading from one end, preferably near the bottom, of the casing A and having a. chamber l0 terminating in an air discharge spout 11, which may lead to the outside or to any place where it is desired to exhaust or use the air for any purpose. Said chamber l() is preferably rectangular, as shown in Fig. 2, but may be of any appropriate form or arrangement desired. One side thereof Speccaton of Letters Patent.

serial no. sosia l2 is formed as a door mounted on hinges 13 and held closed by a catch la, as shown. This door gives ready access to the interior of the chamber, as will be seen.

The screen C is of the form illustrated in Figs. l and 2, being' semi-cylindrical for the greater part of its height and formed with an inclined top 15, as shown. The lower end of said screen rests upon the top surface of a horizontal partition 16, secured at tht lower end of the chamber l0 and serving to close the space between the rear wall of said chamber and said screen. The edges of said screen rest against the sides of the chamber l0, being reinforced by strips 18 secured thereto by fastening devices 17 of any appropriate character. The upper edge of the top l5 is supported by strips 19 so that, in use, the screen may be a self-contained structure adapted to be moved bodily so that it may be readily put in place or removed from position in the chamber 10 for cleaning or other purposes.

In operation, the lint-ladened air, under the impulse of the blower (not shown), passes from the tumbling machine A into exhaust pipe B, then into chamber l0 in front. of screen C, through said screen and from chamber lO out through the exhaust pipe 1l. The screen serves to collect the lint and strain the air, allowing the air to pass out through the exhaust pipe 1l free therefrom, thus overcoming the objections incident to the use of said machines above noted. vWhile the arrangement shown is one found desirable, it will be understood, of course, that I do not limit myself to any speciiic relative position or arrangement of parts, except as deiined in the claim.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

In an air straining apparatus for laundry tumbling machines the combination of a pipe providing an air passageway adapted to communicate with the machine, a partition located at one end of the passageway and providing an imperforate barrier thereat for a section of said passageway, a reinovable screen structure of semi-circular cross section supported at one end on said partition and formed with an inclined top resting against said pipe at the other end thereof and closing the passage therethrough,
