To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK E. BUNDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Envelop-Openers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to envelop openers and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.

An object of the invention is to provide an opener of the character indicated of simple and durable structure one which is cheap to manufacture and may be easily and quickly used for cutting the flap from the body portion of the envelop at the time that the envelop is opened.

With the above object in view the opener comprises a body having a handle or finger piece and a pointed extremity adapted to be inserted between the flaps and the body of the envelop. The body of the opener carries a blade which is inclined with relation to the said pointed extremity and which is provided with a cutting edge adapted to sever the flap from the body of the envelop.

In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of the envelop opener illustrating the manner in which it is used. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the form of envelop opener shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a modified form of the envelop opener. Fig. 1- is an edge elevation of the same. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of still another modified form of the envelop opener.

In the form of the invention as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing the opener comprises a body 1 preferably of metal. The body 1 is provided at one end with a laterally disposed handle or finger piece 2 and at its opposite end the said body is provided with a pointed extremity 3. The body 1 is provided in the vicinity of its ends with recesses 1 and at a point between the said recesses the body is provided with an upstanding lug 5. The recesses 1 are adapted to receive the end portions of ablade 6 and the lug 5 bears against the intermediate portion of the said blade. When the blade 6 is inserted in the recesses 4 it is sprung or bent laterally in order that it may clear the side of the lug 5 and when the blade 6 is finally permitted to seat in the recesses 4 and lateral pressure is removed from the same the said invention is preferably a discarded safety I razor blade which is very thin and may be easily flexed or bent as above indicated.

In the form of the invention as shown in Figs. 3 and 1 of the drawing the body 1 is provided in the. vicinity of its opposite ends w1th spaced lugs 7 arranged in pairs. The blade 6 is held in the spaces between the members of the pairs of lugs 7 as clearly indicated in Fig. 3.

In the form of the invention as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing the body 1 is provided with a cutting edge 8 which is a portion of the said body.

In all of the forms of the invention as hereinbefo-re described the cutting edge of the blade or body 1 is disposed at an angle to the length of the pointed extremity 3 of the body. In use the extremity 3 is inserted between the flap and the body of an envelop and by moving the blade along the fold at the edge of the flap, the flap is severed at the fold from the body of the envelop as most clearly indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawing.

In all the forms of the invention it will be seen that the body 1 and the extremity 3 thereof are of spatulate configuration; consequently when the extremity 3 is inserted between the back flap and the front portion of an envelop the possibility of the opener turning or twisting is prevented and therefore the danger of cutting the fingers While opening the envelop is avoided. The cutting edgeis provided upon the body portion and may be detachably mounted thereon as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, or may be formed directly at the edge of the body and integral therewith as shown in Fig. 5. One edge of the body 1 merges with one 'of the dull convexly curved edges of the extremity 3 at a tangent and the straight cutting edge car ried by the body 1 joins with the other convexly curved edge of the extremity at an angle. The median longitudinal dimension of the body 1 is disposed at an obtuse angle to the median longitudinal dimension of the extremity 3. By thisarrangement the forward blunt edge of the extremity 3 may follow the inner surface of the fold of an envelop and there is no possibility of the extremity penetrating the fold and cutting the fingers during the operation of opening the envelop.
