RUDOLPH M. KUSKEY, OF MICHIGAN CITY, INDIANA.
DOOR-CATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 14, 1916.
Application filed July 3, 1915. Serial No. 37,844.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RUDOLPH M. Kos- KEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Michigan City, in the county of Laporte and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Catches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to door catches, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a spring catch of simple construction, which may be quickly connected to a door casing and which will serve to hold a door closed, and which will permit the opening of the door from either side thereof without touching the catch.
Another object of the invention is to provide a spring catch adapted to be connected to a door frame and to slightly overlap the door, said catch having an outwardly bent end to be engaged by the edge of the door, and said catch adapted to hold the door closed and to also serve to hold the door slightly opened or ajar whenever required.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a door and door frame, having a spring catch thereon made in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the door, door frame and door jamb broken away and showing the spring catch in place with the door closed.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a door, 2 is the door casing, and 3 is the door jamb.
Connected to the door frame at any point within the height of the door, is a spring catch formed preferably of spring wire of the required gage, the terminals of which are bent to form eyes 4 for the attaching screws 5. Intermediate the ends of the catch the wire is bent outward as at 6 to form parallel members spaced apart, and a hook is formed on the outer ends of the members 6, said hook comprising the outwardly extending portions 7. The terminal ends of the members 7 are bent outward as at 8 to form a bevel 9 to be engaged by the edge of the door to spring the catch outwardly and permit the door to pass in closing.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that when the door is to be opened the edge of the'door will spring the catch outward and when the door is being closed the edge of the door will strike the bevel 9 and gradually force the spring catch away from the door until it closes and will then spring back beyond the edge of the door as shown in Fig. 2 to hold the door closed. If it is desired to hold the door slightly opened or ajar, the door is gradually swung on its hinges until it is barely in contact with the hook member 8, when the door will be held slightly ajar until it is desired to pull it or push it closed against the spring action of the catch.
The invention is simple in construction, may be manufactured at low cost. can be quickly placed in position for holding any door closed, can be placed in any position upon the door frame, is entirely out of the way, and is durable and eificient for its purpose.
What is claimed is A spring door catch, comprising a single length of wire having straight end members lying in the same plane and provided with attaching means, and an intermediate catch consisting of spaced members, outwardly extending right angular members, and a hook having a spaced beveled ed e to be engaged by a doorin closing and to hold the door ajar, when desired.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN J. BLOCK, Mon A. CUSHMAN.
