Application filed February 7, 1914. Serial No. 817,372.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GERTRUDE A. ELLIOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pillow-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a pillow holder, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a holder which can be conveniently connected with the body of the user, and which is so constructed that a pillow may be held while the pillow case is being put upon the pillow.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the holder that the resiliency of the material from which the holder is formed will cause the arms of the holder to tightly grip the pillow.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the holder that when in use the arms will extend from the body of the user at an outward angle and thus hold the pillow in a convenient position.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the holder that the clamps of the holder which fit beneath the arms of the user will grip the chest and prevent transverse movement of the holder while the pillow case is being placed upon the pillow.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the pillow holder; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the pillow holder; Fig. 3 is an end view of the pillow holder.
This pillow holder is formed of three strips of resilient wire designated in general by the latters A, B, and C. The wire A which forms the body portion of the holder is bent intermediate its length to form the neck yoke 10 having arms extending there from which are bent upon themselves to form clamps 11 extending at substantially right angles to the body portion of the holder and are intended to clamp about the chest of the user and fit beneath the arms. After forming the clamps 11, the arms of the wire forming the body portion are bent to form the pillow-engaging arms 12 which have their end portions 13 bent inwardly to prevent the arms from tearing the pillow or pillow case. The wires B and C are connected with the body portion A at the points 14 where the wire forming the body portion is bent to form the body-engaging clamps 11 and are then carried across the inner end portions of the clamps 11 as shown at 15. These wires are then coiled about the inner ends of the arms 12 as shown at 16 and are bent to extend in spaced relation to the arms 12 to form the outer pillow-engaging arms 17 which may have their ends bent inwardly as shown at 18 to prevent the pillow or pillow case from being torn. These arms 17 may extend parallel to the arms 12, or if desired, the arms 12 and 17 may converge toward their free ends so that the pillow will be securely held between the arms and prevented from slipping out of place.
hen using this device, the yoke 10 is placed about the neck and the body clamps 11 extend across the chest and beneath the arms so that the pillow holder will be securely held in place and at the same time will not interfere with the operators arms. The pillow is placed between the pillowengaging arms 12 and 17 and is securely held in place by the gripping action of the resilient arms. After the pillow has been put in place as shown in Fig. 2, the pillow case can be easily placed upon the pillow since the pillow case can be grasped with both hands and easily drawn over the pillow. It should also be noted that the arms 12 and 17 will prevent the pillow from crumpling when the pillow case is put in place and that this will greatly aid to the ease with which the pillow case can be placed upon the pillow. After the pillow case is in place, the pillow can be grasped with one hand and removed to withdraw the arms 12 and 17 from within the pillow case. The construction of this holder is such that the pillow does not need to have any special attachments in order to be engaged by the holder and therefore this holder can be used in connection with pillows which are already in use. This pillow holder can be very cheaply manufactured since it is formed from resilient wire which can be easily and quickly bent to resume the desired shape. It should also be noted that a pillow holder formed in accordance with this invention may be very light and therefore can be conveniently carried around from one room to another by a person changing the pillow cases in a number of rooms.
What is claimed is:
1. In a pillow holder a body portion including a neck-engaging member, chest-engaging means for preventing transverse movement of the holderwhen in use, pillowengaging arms, and auxiliary pillow.engaging arms carried by said body portion and cooperating with the pillow-engaging arms of said body portion for releasably holding a pillow.
2 A pillow holder comprising a body port1on 1nclud1ng a neck-engaging member, body engagmg clamplng means, reslhent pillow-engaging means, and auxillary p11- low-engaglng means carried by said body portion and cooperating with the resilient silient wire havingtheir inner end portions connected with the arms of said body portion at points adjacent the inner end portions of said body clamps and being then bent to extend in spaced relation to the pillow-engaging arms of said body portion whereby a pillow may be held between the auxiliary clamping arms and the clamping arms of said body portion.
4. In a pillow holder a plurality of-sets of resilient pillow-engaging arms extending in spaced relation whereby a pillow may be releasably held by being placed between the sets of resilient pillow-engaging arms.
5. In a pillow holder a plurality of sets of pillow engaging arms extending in spaced relation and having their outer end portions bent to prevent the tearing of a pillow or pillow case.
