THE NORRIS PETERS 60.. PHORD-LITHQ. WASHINGTON. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIGE,
HENRY J. LUCAS, OF WHITESTONE, NEW YORK.
GARBAGE-CAN.
Application filed December 23, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY J. Lucas, a citizen of the United States, residing at Whitestone, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage- Cans; and I do hereby declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to garbage cans, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a garbage can having a bottom which is always kept dry by means of perforations within the bottom communicating with a gutter secured around the bottom of the can inside the can body to reccive the drippings which ooze from the can containing the garbage.
The can is provided with a discharge spout communicating with the gutter through a series of perforations, in the lower edge of the can body and in the gutter.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a central vertical section taken through a garbage can made in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. looking in the direction indicated by the arrow, Fig. 3 is a detail section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates a garbage can which may be of any desired size or shape and made of any suitable gage of metal, said can having a removable cover 2 and provided with a bail or handle 3, of any suitable construction. Fitted within the lower end of the body 1 of the can is a bottom a provided around near its periphery with a series of perforations Secured within the lower portion of the body 1 of the can is a gutter comprising the annular outer wall 6 which is fitted within the lower end of the can and Specification of Letters Patent.

an inclined wall 7, which engages the underside of the bottom l, said cover being secured permanently in place in any suitable manner. The bottom at is inclined from the central point a outward toward the outer edge of the can. The spout for discharging the drippings is connected to the body 1 of the can and is designated by the numeral 8, said spout being disposed in line with the series of perforations 9 in the can body in line with the center. The spout 8 may be secured to the body of the can by means of rivets 10, or in any suitable manner.
From the drawing it will be obvious that the garbage can may be manufactured at practically low cost and provide suiiicient means for draining the contents of the can from the center and discharging the water which oozes out from the garbage leaving the latter comparatively dry and less liable to ferment and decay.
.Vhat is claimed is 2- A. garbage can comprising a tubular body being open at both ends, the body also having apertures formed near one end, a spout secured to the body, the upper end being positioned above the uppermost aperture, and a bottom secured within the body, said bottom inclining from its center toward its periphery, said bottom provided with a series of circular apertures near its edges, a vertical cylindrical wall secured to the underside of the bottom at its edge, said wall being provided with apertures arranged to aline with the apertures in the body, and inwardly and upwardly inclined walls connecting the lower terminal of the vertical wall with the bottom to form a gutter which communicates with the interior of the can and spout.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY J. LUCAS.
