' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb 23,1915.
Application filed May a, 1913. Seria1 in). 765,310.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER S. HENDREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nicholasville, in the county of Jessamine and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys; and it has for its object the provision of a device of this character which will include a grotesque jointed figure mounted so as to gravitationally assume one position normally and means for operating the figure whereby to cause the same to assume various acrobatic positions;
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a side view of the toy; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section therethrough; Fig. 3 is a vertical section, taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4: is a section taken on line 14: of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment of my invention, a platform 1 or equivalent support is employed and constructed of a thin strip of board mounted at its corners on cleats 3 whereby the board may be spaced from the object upon which the device is mounted and the board rendered resonant, so as to permit sounds to emanate therefrom as will be hereinafter explained. The board is provided with a pair of vertical passages 3 in which are secured extensions 4L on the forelegs 5 of animal simulating object herein illustrated. The legs 5 are pivoted at 6 to the body portion of the object and at the rear the body portion 7 is pivoted at 8 to the hind-legs 9, the latter having their lower ends freely mounted upon the board 1, so that when the body of the object is tilted, the legs 9 may be brought to knock thereagainst with a resultant emanation of treadlike sounds. The body 7 through the fact that its major portion is extended beyond the pivot 6 obviously permits the object to normally assume a standing position as shown in Fig. 1. The neck and head are extended beyond the fore-legs 5 so as to in eflect form a lever so that when pull is applied to the head the body 7 may be tilted in a vertical direction as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The head 10 has secured thereto one end of a cord 12, the latter being extended in a forward direction and accommodated in guides 13 and 14: mounted upon the board 1. The cord 12 is provided with a free end which is extended beyond one end of the board 1 and secured to a ring 15 through which may be passed the finger to permit pull to be applied to the cord with a resultant transmission of movement to the figure.
On the back of the animal figure herein shown is mounted a figure 17 simulating a clown and including a body 18, jointed limbs 19 and arms 20, the latter having pivotal connection at 21 with the body 18 and having pivotal connection at 22 with the body 7 at a point immediately at the rear of the pivot 6 between the legs 5 and the body 7 of the animal figure. The lower edge of the body 18 rests normally on the upper edge of the body 7 so as to permit the body 18 to readily occupy different positions along the upper edge of the body 7 when the latter is tilted. Through this construction it is seen that when pull is applied to the operating cord 12, the animal figure may have transmitted thereto kicking-like movements, and under such movements the clown simulating figure will be made to appear as performing various feats.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advan tages of this invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A toy comprising a platform, a figure mounted thereabove and provided with a portion fixed thereto and including a jointed portion and a gravitationally-influenced body between the fixed portion and the jointed portion and operable to normally maintain a standing position of the figure with the jointed portion thereof resting under certain adjusted positions of the body 0 against the platform, and a jointed figure of the first figure.
mounted upon the first figure and including In testimony whereof I afliX my signature arms pivoted to the body of the first figure in presence of two Witnesses.
and a body pivoted to the arms and movable With relation to the body of the first figure WALTER HENDREN' and freely resting on the body thereof, the Witnesses:
said second figure also including jointed legs E. D. SUTHERLAND,
adapted to be manipulated on the platform J. B. KNIGHT.
