To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN W. COOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Midland, in the county of Midland and State of Michigamhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toilet Vessels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain improvements in toilet vessels and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in the sick room and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this particular type having means of a novel and improved character whereby the same may be employed for differing purposes without any undue inconvenience and with facility.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expen-' sive, and I otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter morefully set forth.

The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1, is a view in top plan of a vessel constructed in accordance with an em;

bodiment of my inventiongFig. 2, is a view in side elevation of my device as illustrated in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, is a view in side elevation, with a portion broken away, of a vessel constructed in accordancewith a further embodiment of my invention; and Fig. 4 is ;a view in top plan of my device as set forth in Fig. 3.

In the embodiment of my invention as set forth in Figs. 1 and 2, I set forth a conventional form of bed pan wherein 1 denotes the bottom portion provided with the opening 2, the surrounding portion of the pan being so formed as to fit or be slid under the patient or user. At the rear of the pan is positioned the spout 3.

In order that the bed pan maybe employed with convenience and facility as a urinal I have the rear portion of the opening 3, recessed as at 4: and shapened somewhat after the fashion of a V and disposed upwardly fromthe pan and in close proximity to the'recess 3 is the; flange or hood 5,. also substantially V shaped infform and which 1s adapted to catch the urineejected by the user and thus preventing the urine from passing beyond 'thepa'n.v

The hood or flange 5 may be of any predetermined height and as herein disclosed is disposed substantially in alinement with the spout 3 so that by having the parts so arranged as to eject the urine directly upon the hood or flange 5, no urine will pass or spatter through the spout 3, which spout is intended solely for the purposes of emptying and cleaning or rinsing.

In order to close the opening 2 and the spout 3 when the device is not in use, I employ a suitable cover'member comprising a flanged body portion 6, adapted to snugly fit within the opening 2, and being provided with a lip or extension 7, adapted to close the recess 4 as is particularly shown in Fig.

1. The body portion 6, is also providedwith an extension 8, adapted to overlie the open end of the spout 2, and being cut away, as at 9, so that the hood or flange 5 may pass which is adapted to serve as a urinal, the

conformation of such spoutreadily permitting it to be employed with convenience in connection with a female patient or user or therethrough andthus offer no obstruction to receive the parts of a male patient or userin order to guard against any undue scattering or splas'hmg of the urme while being ejected. The vessel 10, is adapted to be closed by the cover member 12, suitable flanged as at 1 1, such flange engaging the interior of the vessel 10 and-being provided with the upwardly directed suitable formed I extension 15, adapted to close the upper or open end of the spout 11. I

From the foregoing description of my improvements, it is thought to befobvious that a toilet vessel constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be employed for differing I purposes, and it is also thought to be obvious from the foregoing description that a toilet vessel constructed in accordance with my invention is susceptible to some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit of the invention and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact formation and arrangement of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my i-n-- vention in practice.

Having thus fully descrlbed my inventlon, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
