EYELESS NEEDLE.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 11, 1914:.
Application filed June e, 1913. Serial No. 772,705.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PATRICK ROBERT MINAHAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of fisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eyeless Needles, of which the following is a specification, reference beinghad therein to the accompanying drawmg.
This invention relates to needles and has for its object the production of an eyeless needle.
Another object of this invention is the production of an eflieient thread holding means to prevent the accidental removal of the thread from the needle.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved needle with a thread attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my needle with one end in section. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33 Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of one end of my needle. Fig. 5 is a detailed perspective view of one end of my needle.
Referring to the drawing by numerals 1O denotes the body of my improved needle that has a tapered pointed end 11. On the opposite end of the body 10 is a split shank 12 which consists of two parts and is provided with the external rounded threads 13. A longitudinally extending tapered thread receiving bore or groove 14 is formed in said shank. A sleeve 15 provided with rounded threads 16 on its inner face is adapted to be threaded on the shank 12 of the body. A thread 17 is shown positioned in the groove or bore of the shank.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that to attach the thread to the needle the sleeve must be removed, and the end of the thread inserted in the groove or bore of the shank. The sleeve is then threaded on the shank and inasmuch as the groove is tapered and the split shank contracts, the thread is held tightly in connection with the needle. By having the threads rounded the threads do not cut the inserted piece of thread, that the ordinary threads would do and thereby tend to wear and finally break the piece of inserted thread.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material thereof. It is, therefore, not wished to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is An eyeless needle comprising a pointed forward end, a rearwardly extending threaded shank carried thereby, said shank being split longitudinally of its length for constituting a substantially tapering shank when the same is in a compressed condition, the threads upon said shank being rounded, said shank provided with a longitudinally extending groove adjacent the split portion of said shank, an internally threaded sleeve positioned upon said shank and being provided with rounded threads, said threads upon said shank adapted to grip a thread and extending within said groove of said shank for substantially one-half the depth thereof and constituting eiiicient means for binding a thread in engagement with said needle.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PATRICK ROBERT MINAHAN.
