Description

diritti' tete 'anni effet Roscoe-J. SMITH, or No'nfrngnnvnn, MAINE- Letters Patent No. 100,260, dated November v15, 1,870 antedated ovember 5, 1870.
IMPROVEMENI'IIl IN TACYKLEeBLOCKS'.l
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent: and making part of the same.
To all persons to 'whom these presents may come:
Be it known that I, ROSCOE J .-SMITH, of North Haven, of the county of Knox and State of Maine, have made anew and useful invention having reference to Tackle-Blocks; and dov hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawing, of which.-
Figure l is a iront elevation,
Figure ,2, a side view,
, Figure 3, a vertical section, and
Figure 4, a horizontal section of aA block provided with my invention, the nature of which consists in an arrangement and combination of two springs or series of springs, a yoke, and a shouldered strap 'or frame, as hereinafter described, together and with a tackle-block, the whole being as explained.
Y In such drawingf A denotes a common double-sheaved tackle-block, of which a a are the -grooved rollers or shearcs.
This block is encompassed by a metallic strap'or frame, B, provided with two abutments or shoulders, s s, arranged on opposite sides of the block, and in other respects as represented.
A yoke, C, formed with two parallel legs, b b, and a cross-bar, c, pivoted to a shackle, d', extends down vthrough the frame B and its shoulders, in manner as shown in iig, 3.
Each of the legs also goes through one of two series of springs or blocks of rubber, (l d d, and a series ot' metallic plates, e ce, arranged with the said rubber blocks, and so as to separate them from one another in manner as indicated in the drawing.
y The upper spring'of each of the series rests directly against one of the shoulders of the frame B.
y lhe blocks of rubber, as well as their separationplat'es, are notched upon the side bars of the frame B, whereby the said plates and springs are steadied during contraction or expansion of the springs.
`Each leg of the yoke has a screw, f, formed on it, at and near its lower end, to receive a nut, g, which', when screwed on the leg, 'serves to keep the springs and pla-tes ot each series in their true relationswith cach other, and with the shoulder of the frame B.
The object of the springs so applied to the block is to prevent any sudden strain on it, while it may be in use, from breaking the sheaves or their center-pin p, or otherwise.injuring the block, or whatever may be4 connected 4with it.
I am aware of the subject of the patent No. 92,535,
dated July 13, 1869, and make'no claim thereto.
I in no respect recess the cheeksot' my block to receive elast-'ic cushions vadapted to be compressed between the arms of a strap and the upper ends or parts of the recesses of the cheeks.' f I employ in the construction of my block, andiu the application of springs to it and its yoke, the shouldered strap or saddle Bto extend along the sides of' and underneath and across the block A, such. saddle accomplishing three purposes, viz., a support for the springs, as a rest for the bottom o f the block, and, with the yokev O, a means of encompassing the block and, strengthening it, so as to prevent it irom break-` ing apart laterally... -I therefore claim,-
dered saddle B, as described, the yoke G, the springs,
and the body part A, provided with one or moresheaves, all being arranged and combined as explained. f ROSGOE J. SMITH.
