COMBINED CARRYING-CASE AND' DISPLAY DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 10, 13114.
Application filed October 16, 1911. Serial-No. 655,009.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BENTON I-I. Bannrrr, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Carrying-Cases and Display Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved form of combined sample-ease and display device, particularly adapted for carrying and displaying wallpaper samples; and'to provide in such device improved means for rigidly securing the parts in their extended positions for use as a display device.
An illustrative embodiment of this invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, tlie parts being shown in their folded positions for use as a sample-case. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the device in use as a display support. Fig. 1 is a fragmentary sectional elevation showing the position of the supports and braces when folded.
In the construction shown in the drawings, the device comprises a pair of similar box parts 1 and 2, preferably rectangular, hinged together at one side by hinges 3, and adapted to be folded one upon the other into the form of a closed sample-case, as shown in Fig. 1. The parts are secured in their folded positions by suitable means, such as the usual snap locks 1t, and one of the parts has a handle secured thereto. Samples may be placed in the case for transportation. The parts 1 and 2 are adapted to be extended in substantial alinement and supported in an inclined position, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to serve the purpose of a rack for displaying the samples. In such position, the parts are supported by means ofa pair of legs, each of which comprises sections ('3, T, and 8, pivotally connected together at their ends, so that, when folded, the sections will. lie one against the other and occupy a minimum of space within the case. The sections 6 and 7 are provided with studs 9 against which shoulders or projections 10, formed on the ends of the sections 7 and 8, abut when the sections are shifted to their extended positions. The sections 7 and 8 are provided with grooves or slots 11 adapted samples thereto when being displayed.
to receive-the lugs 9 when the sections are folded so as to allow them to lie close together.
The legs and the parts 1 and 2 are rigidly secured in their extended positions by means of braces, which comprise sections 12 and 13 pivotally connected together at their ends and respectively provided with studs 14 and shoulders 15, similar to those on the leg sections. The sections 12 are pivotally connected to the sections 8 and the sections 13 areprovided with notches 16 adapted to engageshoulders or studs 17 projecting inwardly from the ends of the part 2 adjacent to itshinged connection to the part 1.
Thus, the parts are rigidly secured in their extended positions for use as a display support.
The part 1 is provided with a suitable hook 18, which may be used for securing As illustrated in the drawings, the device is shown in use for displaying wallpaper samples 19, bound in the usual book form and provided with a string 20 adapted to be se cured over the hook 18 for supporting the sample book on the support.
The operation of the device shown is as follows :lVhen the device is to be used for a display support, the parts 1 and 2 are un locked and swung to their extended positions, with part 1 uppermost. The sections of the folded legs are each successively swung outwardly and upwardly on their pivots to a substantially alined position, as limited by the lugs 9 and shoulders 10. The sections 12 and 13 are then extended and the notches 16 seated over the studs 17, whereupon the parts are rigidly secured in position for use as a display device. In its use as shown in the drawings, the book of wallpaper samples 19 is secured on the display support by attaching the binding string 20 to the hook 18. The salesman may then stand at one side, grasp the book and hold it in the position illustrated in Fig. 3, and allow the samples to fall one at a time to be viewed by the customer. After exhibiting the samples, it is a simple operation to fold the device to its sample case 'form with the samples inclosed.
Although but one specified embodiment of this invention is herein shown and described, it will be understood that numerous details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit 5 of this invention, as defined by the following claims. I claim i 1. In a device of the class described, a; foldable stump jointed sample casing in combination with a coacting rearwardly projecting support, and bracing means arranged to bear on the ground and to engage the casing adjacent to its upper edge and at l a point lower down respectively to maintain the samein an inclined position for displaying samples when extended and placed with its substantially plain, outer side facing for- 1 ward and upward.
2. In a device of the class described, a v sample case comprising a pair of comple- 1 mentary casing sections hinged together in stump-joint arrangement to prevent folding except in their closing direction, in combinai tion with support means foldable within said casing and adapted to rest on the ground and to engage one of said sections adjacent to its outer edge to support the case in substantially upright position when said case is opened and stood upon the remote edge of the opposite section and inclined backwardly with the hinged side facing the support i means, the forward exterior side of said cas- 1ng when thus arranged and supported presenting a substantially continuous even display surface.
8. In a device of the class described, a sample case comprising a plurality of sections hinged together in stump-joint arrangement to prevent folding except in one direction when opened and adapted when opened to lie substantially in alinement, in combination with a support member foldable within the case and pivoted thereto adj acent to the upper and outer edge of one of the sections to support the case When the 7 same is extended and set on edge for display purposes and inclined backwardly against the said support member, and a foldable brace member pivoted to the lower portion of said support member and adapted to en gage one of the case sections to prevent relative spreading of the support member and easing.
Signed at Chicago this 13th day of October 1911.
