Letters Patent No. 108.613, dated October 25, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN NUT-LOCKS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters vPatent; and making part of the same 'j'o all whonm't may concern:
sin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks; and do hereb'vdeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
rlhe nature of myimfention consists in providing the bolt with a right and a left-hand screw-thread, und using two corresponding nuts which are grooved on the adjoining surfaces, and a spring inserted therein for locking theni.
In order to enable others skilled iu the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed draw-ing, which forms a part ofthis specification, and in which- Figure l is a. side view of the bolt, showing two nuts in section;
Figure 2 is an outside view of the inner nut; and
Figure 3 is an inside view of the outer nut.
represents the bolt, which is provided at its outer endwitha right-hand and a left-hand screw, as shown in 1` The outer screw-thread is that much smaller than the inner, so that the inner nut or tap can readily slip over the same.
Two nuts, B and C, are put on the bolt A, the nut l corresponding with the inner screw-tlueads and the nut U with the outer,
The outer surface of the inner nut C is -provided with an annular groove, a, in which is placed a steel pring, l1, secured by a screw at one end extending the around one-half of the groove, and its other end bent outward through a slot, (Z, inthe nut, direct-ly opposite the screw which secures the spring.
The inner sur'ace ofthe outer nutCis provided with a siniilargroove, a', and slot, ll',
rlhe inner uut Bbeing screwed tight, the outer nut (l is also screwed up against the inner uut.
lhe inner end ot' the spring b is made to rest or tit in the groove on thc inner nut, while the outer end springs outward into the groove in the outer nut.
The aperture or slot d' is'so constructed that the front or .outer end of the spring b rests in the same, which locks the outer nut to the inner. It is unlocked by pressing the protruding portion of the spring to the bottoni otl the aperture d iu the inner nut, when the out-er nut can be unscrewed.
When the nuts are locked it will be seen that the inner nut cannot turn inward, because it bears against the thing secured, andnot outward, because it bears against the outer nut. The outer nut can turn outward, because the spring holds it iu place.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
lhe combination of the two nuts B and C, provided with grooves a, a', spring b, and slots or apertures d d', and bolt A, constructed as herein set forth.
