0Be it known 'thgt I, ALBERT T. Weiss, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and vState of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covered Receptacles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact descripj tion of the same, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, forming a part of this specication, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.

The present invention relates to "covered receptacles and' has for its object to provide an article of this character 1n' which the cover is attached 4to the receptacle but capable of movement `to an open position in which it will be conveniently disposed at one side of the receptacle, the contents of the latter being more readily accessible by virtue of such position of the cover which can nevertheless be easily and accurately readjusted to its closed position. t

Another object of my invention is to provide means for maintaining the cover secure in its open position and to in general furnish a receptacle having these before mentioned characteristics that will yet be simple 1n design and in process of manufacture, permitting of its production at low cost.

The improvements are further directed 1n part .toward providing a device of the character indicated which will be particularly adapted to the reception of card indexes and similar filing systems.

To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.

In the drawings: Figure l is a central longitudinal section of a card index tray constructed inaccordance with and illustrating one embodiment of my 'present invention, one set of devices connecting' the receptacle and cover being shown in side elje\ tration with the latter in its open position; Fig. 2 is a detail View on the same section as Fig. 1, but showing the cover in a position assumed during its opening and closing movements; Fig. 3 is a similarv detail view showing the cover closed, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section through the cover, while peinltaken substantially on the line 4 4 of Similar reference numerals throughout the views indicate the same parts.

As before indicated, the invention is particularly applicable for use in connection with the construction of card index trays, which latter being frequently consulted for reference purposes capable of rapid and convenient access, and with the cover so disposed, whenopen, that one portion of the interior Will be as easy to get at as another and display the contents as favorably for instant insertion or removal. Though the invention is Widely applicable to containers of other and different descriptions and purposes it is for these reasons that I have shown it herein embodied in an index tray, and referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates a tray or receptacle and 2 the cover, the former being provided in the present instance with the usual follower block wall 4 cards .5 are compressed, though only a few of the latter are in the present instance shown, and, as is usualv in s'iich trays, the coperating rims or edges of the receptacle and cover are formed with complementary rabbets 6 which hold the two in exact register when-the cover is closed.

In the practice of my invention, one of the members, preferably the tray itself, is provided with an extensionl on the inner side of each of its lateral walls and extends above the plane* of the rim thereof and is in the present form of a plate 8 fastened at 9. In order to keep the cardsl from engagement with the parts 8 and 11 I prefer to provide spacing strips 17 on the lowerportlons of the tray walls.

I claim as my invention:

1. l.Thecombination with a receptacle andA a cover therefor, of a link pivotally connected -to each and a stop on thelink coperating with the cover to limit pivotal movement of the latter in one direction relatively to the link when the cover is 4 in an open position.
