STEPHAN KOBZY, F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
'BooK-HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that l, STEPHAN Kozr, a subject of the King of Hungary, and a res1 dent of the city ot Chicago, county of Cook,
` forming a part of this specification,
and State of illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Book- I-lolders, of vwhich the following is a specitication.
My invention relates to book holders and particularly to the class of such holders flor use oit invalids or readers, who do not desire .to support the book while usingit, and the object is to provide a device of tlns character which will be simple of construction and efficient in operation.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawmgs and in which,
l Figure 1 is a front elevation of my devlce, Fig. 2 is a top elevation of the book holder, Fig. 3 is a top view of the clamp supporting the book holder on the stand portion, Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the book holding member, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail of a age holding mechanism. i
The `preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings comprises a base portion 6 mounted on casters 7 and provided with a standard 8. When it is so desired the base portion 6 may be dispensed with and a suitable clamping member (not shown) secured to a bedstead, ichair or other suitable article to support the device. The clamping 'member 9 is adjustablysecured to the stand ard 8 by means ofv a manually operative clamping screw 10 and provided with the .supporting member 11 which is provided the ears 17 of the with a square perforation therethrough to receive the squared end 12 of the supporting 45 farm 13.- -Said squared end of the supporting arm 13 is fitted snugly in the square perforation 12. A second clamping member 14 is provided with a manually operative clamping screw 15 to adjust-ably secure said clamping member on said supporting arm. Said supporting member 14 is provided with anupright 1G on which is pivotally secured body portion 18. Pivoted on the body portion 18 is a pair of wings 19. A pair of curved connect-ing rods 20 are pivoted on said stud 16 above said ears 17 and provided with pins 21 to engage slots 22 Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April (10,

formed in ears 23 on said wings 19. Threaded on the upright 16 is the spring-faced thumb nut 24 formed with a recess 25 in its lower portion and provided with a spring 25 to frietionally contact the topmost of the curved connecting rods 20 to tension said curved connecting rods 20 and the ears 17 on the upright lf3 in order portion 18 and the wings 1,9- in desired positions. ln proximity with the thumb nut 24 is threaded a locking nut 2G to lock said thumb nut 24. The locking nut 2G is provided with an elongation in which is rotatively mounted the supporting arm 27 of a lamp 28 positioned in the manner to furnish light for illuminating the pages of a book secured on the book holder. A reflector 29 otn conventional design is employed to throw the light from said lamp toward the book on the holder.
A tongue 30 is formed on the perpendicular lip on each of the wings 19 and a recess 30 is formed in ear-h ot said wings 19 in a manner so that the tongues 80 will engage the recess 30 when the wings 1S) are in closed positions. The tongues 30 are also provided to support the inner edges ol" a large book when held on the holder, thus preventing the central portion from sagging. On one ofthe wings 19 is formed a latch 31 to engage a catch 32 on the other of said wings to lock them together when in their closed positions.
Depended from the body portion 18 is an arm 33 provided with a perforation in which is adjustably secured a supporting `member 34 by means of a thumb screw 35. The siilpporting end of the member 34 is bifurcated and a liell crank lever 8G -pivoted in the bifurcated members of said support., as at 37, and the central portion ot' said bell crank lever is provided with the faces 38 and 39 at right angles with each other and provided to engage a plunger 40 actuated by a helical spring 41 in a recess formed in the supporting member 34 in a manner to lock the bell crank lever in the position shown in Figs. 4 and 5, or inl the position indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 4 to lock the page holding members out of the path ot the leaves of a book when held by the device. The bell crank leverv 3G is provided with a stud 42 on which is pivoted the page holding4 members 43. A thumb nut 44 is threaded on said stud and provided with a recess in which is positioned a helical to secure the body' bell crank lever 36 thrown to the posit-ion holding members i3 to lock them in vdesire-d positions.
The device when closed takes the position indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2 and upon swinging to the position shown in Fig. 2 in full lines a support is formed by the wings 19 and their tongues 30 for an open book. rlhe wings 19 areitrictionally locked in the position' shown in Fig. 2 by means of the spring faced thumbnut Q4 frictionally bindingthe curved connecting rods 20 and the ears 17 against the shoulder of the clamping member 14. The page holding members are placed in the position indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 4t and the book opened to the desired page and the lW'hile 1 have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into eltect, this is capable of variation and inodicaticn witbout departing; from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth but desireto avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
