KEY-RING HOLDER,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 1'7, 1912.
Application filed November 12, 1910. Serial No. 591,957.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERBERT ELDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Key-Ring Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists of a device for holding a mans key-ring and keys thereon supported on the wall of the pocket of his trousers instead of allowing same to fall like a lump at the bottom of said pocket, causing an unsightly bulge in the leg of hls trousers, and, furthermore, causing the wearer the continual discomfort of feeling his keys rubbing against his leg. By the present invention both these objections are overcome.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which like numbers of reference denote like parts wherever they occur, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the upper part of a pair of trousers, broken away so as to reveal the rear part of the inner wall of one of the pockets; Flg. 2 shows the position of the key-ring when the detachable member of the key-ring holder is being inserted in the fixed member; Fig. 3 is a detailed view of said detachable member.
In the preferred form of the invention the plate 1 is sewed or otherwise attached to the wall of the pocket (preferably the rear wall) and said plate is so attached preferably at such a height as to allow the keys of the wearer to hang in a natural depression opposite part of the trousers pocket. The presence of this depression prevents the friction caused. by the pressure of the trousers leg upon the keys at a point lower down, as for instance where the keys are now ordinarily carried. In the preferred form of this invention said plate 1 contains a slot 2 that extends parallel to the pocket inlet and into which a button 3 of the detachable member 4 is inserted (as shown in Fig. 2), so as to pass between said plate 1 and the cloth forming the pocket. After said button 3 has been thus inserted between said cloth and plate 1 the detachable member 4 is turned to the position shown in Fig. 2, and the key-ring 5 and keys 6 are held by gravity substantially locked in slot 2, as the width of button 3 is such as to prevent its movement out of slot 2 except when turned to the position illustrated in Fig. 2.
The detachable member 4: has a shank that is offset from the head thereof, thereby forming a shoulder, the shank being coinparatively narrow and having its lower free end curled or bent to form an eye 7. The eye 7 projects beyond the rear face of the shank to. normally underlie the lower side edge of the plate, so that the eye when brought into contact with the plate will prevent upward movement of member 4-. The eye 7 receives the key-ring 5 as depicted in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Of course it will be readily understood that a key-chain or similar device may be substituted for the keyring mentioned herein.
In actual practice it has been found that a bunch of keys suspended in a mans trousers pocket, as hereinbefore described, does not make its presence felt but its presence is practically negligible because of hanging in the depression between the leg and abdomen and, furthermore, in actual practice it has been found that the weight of the bunch of keys seems unnoticeable due to the different point on which such weight is borne. Because of the presence of the keys and their apparent weight being negligible when suspended by the present invention, the comfort of the wearer is greatly enhanced.
I claim: v
A key-ring holder composed of a substantially rectangular plate for attachment to the wall of a pocket, said plate having a vertical slot, and a member having a head of less length. and greater width than said slot, said head being receivable through said slot and having a comparatively narrow shank that is offset from the head, forming a shoulder, the lower free end of said shank being curled to form an integral eye through which the key-ring is adapted to be passed,
said eye being bent rearwardly to project In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my geyorgd the reall'l face of tha shlzllnkfdthe 1Enemsignature in the presence of two witnesses.
er etween t e e e an s on er ein adapted to receive the portion of the plat: HERBERT ELDER between one end of the slot and the adjacent Witnesses:
