In Figs. 1-3 a is the lower part of the carriage on which the upper part b can turn in a horizontal plane. The cradle support c is journaled on the upper part b so as to turn about the trunnions d. The cradle support a is ri 'dly fixed to the cradle e, which carries Two toothed sectors g,-with which the pinions h of the elevating gear engage, are attached to the cradle. The-center of the curves of the toothed sectors lies in the axis of the trunnions. At the side of the cradle support there is a pin i, on which a twoarmed couplin lever k is pivoted. A pin l at one end of t e lever engages in a guiding groove m on the barrel f. The other end of the lever is "forms a coupling with a part n fixed to the carriage' A groove wedge- ;shaped in cross section is. formed in J the sector shaped part 1, into which the correspondingly wedge shaped end of the lever'k loosel fits in the stationary position of the barrel. The guiding groove in the barrel consists of two parts. As soon as the pin 1 reaches the upper part of the groove in the forward movement of the barrel, the lever is is turned about its pivot and its wedge shaped end pressed firmly into the wedge shaped groove. Any tilting of the barrel and cradle is thus prevented. At the end of the recoil movement the connection is released. vThe center of the curve of the wedge shaped groove is in the axis of the trunnion, and the length of the grooves such, that for all practical elevations the coupling is maintained throughout the sliding movement of the barrel.

I claim as my invention:
1. In a gun having a differential recoil, the combination 'of a carriage, a reeoiling barrel, means for elevating the barrel, means for automatically locking the barrel to the carriage independently of the elevating mechanism and means for automatically actuating said last mentioned means to efi'ect such locking during the forward movement of the barrel, said last mentioned means antomatically releasing saidlocking mecha-' nism during the recoil of the barrel.
