To all whomit 'may concern .Be it known that I, D. N. SELLIG, of the eity of Newburg, county of Orange and State of N ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Beds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a fulland exact description thereof, reference being hadto the annexed drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of my invention consists in formingthe spring or springsin beds of single continuous strips, curved at either end somewhat'in the form of a senneircle, thereby giving height Ato they bed and securing the same upon connecting strips which support the springs in an upright position, and which are yielding or flexible from the curved or bent ends.

Also, in slotting or providing a series of openings in the lower or return ends of the springs, to receive the thumb-nuts, so as to adjust the strength or stifi`- ness of the springs as required.

To enable others skilledin the art to make and use my improved spring-bed, I will proceed to describe the same in detail, in which Figure l represents a view, ilrperspective, o1' a sin gie spring detached from the bedstead, which it is not deemed necessary to delineate here, as these springs may be used upon almost any hedstead, and as many of them as may be required.

FigureZ is a side elevation of tig. l, having a spiral spriugshown in the middle thereof', which may or may not be used.

Figure 3 is also a side elevation oi Iig. l, with the addition of' having more material in the curved or bent ends, leaving the springs much stronger and not so yielding as in figs. 1 and 2.'

Let A in the annexed drawings represent the upper part of the springs, to receive and support the bed or mattrass.

rlhe opposite ends of these are curved at B, somewhat in the form cfa semi-circle, with thereturn ends C extending sutliciently inward to rest upon and be secured to supporting strips D.

To secure these springs A to the strips D, thumbnuts E are provided, which extend through the openings F in the lower or return ends C and into the strips D, firmly clamping the springs and supporting strips together, as seen in -the several lfigures, imparting more or less elasticity thereto through the curved or bent ends B, by Asecuring the lower or return ends O neareror further from the eXtreme ends c, by means oi' the tln 1rn'bm1ts- E. y

Thumbnuts R may also be' used to secure, in any desiredposition, the supporting stripsD upon the b edstead.

Toim part additional strength tothe curved or bent part of the springs B, in order to sustain greater weights, they may be made thickerat the two ycurved or bent ends, B, and gradually drawn down tothe thickness otA the upper or straight p art A of the springs, as shown in fig; 3. v

To adj ust these springs lto the reqnirementsof' different persons, rendering them more or lesselasticor yielding, as required, the lower or return ends 0 are slotted, or are provided with a series of openings,AF, so that the thumb-nuts .E may be placed nearer to the curves B, to increase the rigidity of the springs, or nearer to the inner ends e, to render them more elastic or yielding;

li" desired, spiral sprhigs M may be placed between the straight or upper part oi the springs A and the supporting strips D, to add to theirstrength, but their employment is notl deemed necessary, and is optional with the manufacturer.

These springs may be made of any desired material, the upper part A being suliiciently thin to yield or bend when pressed upon, and the iiexibility to allow them to yield and to restore them to a straight position again when relieved of weight being produced by the curved or bent ends B.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters latent, is

The spring A, bent ends B B, and provided with slots ora F F, in its recurvedends ot' attachment to the strip D, all in combination with the said strip, i'orthe purposes herein specified.
