To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN M. SHARIT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Morris, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices to Prevent Cows from Kicking, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to devices to prevent cows from kicking while being milked and to assist in controlling vicious and refractory animals, and it has for its object to produce a device of this class which shall be simple in construction, inexpensive and capable of being easily applied to cows of various sizes.

With this and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.

1 designates an arch or bow member of suitable dimensions to straddle the hind quarters of a cow, said bow being formed about midway between its ends with an upwardly extending angular recess 2 to fit the contour of the back of the animal and to prevent lateral displacement of the device when placed in position. The arch or bow member 1 is provided upon the upper side and near the ends thereof with blocks 3 having ratchet teeth 4 and side flanges 5. Pivoted upon the arch or bow member, adjacent 'to the ends thereof, are levers 6 having upthe shoes 9 at the extremities of the levers are placed in engagement with the hind legs, after which the upper ends of the levers are moved outward to press the limbs of the animal in an inward and forward direction, the levers being maintained in adjusted position by engagement of the pawls 8 with the ratchets 4. When the device is thus adjusted, the animal can not possibly kick, and vicious and refractory animals may be of fectively subdued and broken for the milking operation by this means.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is

1. An anti-kicking device for cows comprising an arch member, ratchet blocks upon said arch member near the ends thereof, levers pivotally connected with the ends of the arch member and having ratchet engaging pawls, and U-shaped leg engaging shoes upon the lower ends of the levers.

2. A device of the class described comprising an arch member having an upwardly extending angular recess intermediate the ends thereof, flanged ratchet blocks secured upon the arch member near the ends thereof, levers pivoted upon the arch member at the ends thereof and having upwardly extending handles and ratchet engaging pawls, and U-shaped leg engaging shoes at the lower ends of the levers.
