Abstract

The appts. has an optical intensity sensor (14) mounted near an interior rear-view mirror (16). The sensor has a receiving section sensitive to a defined range of infrared wavelengths directed (18) forwards and upwards from its transmitting section. A photodiode produces a signal dependent on the intensity of radiation back-scattered from water droplets in the atmosphere. A processing unit (24) controls the output of the visible light sources (13) in front and rear fog lamps (10,12) according to the calculated visibility range, which can be displayed (26) to the driver. ADVANTAGE - Range of visibility can be measured with sufficient accuracy to prevent dazzling following drivers.
