Abstract

A composition comprises starch and a part amide, part salt of a styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer in which the salt cations are ammonium or alkali metal. The amide and salt groups may be present in the equal quantities in the copolymer which may have a molecular weight of 3000-15,000 and be present in the composition as 1-90% by weight of the starch. The copolymer may be prepared by heating styrene and maleic anhydride in bulk in the presence of benzoyl peroxide and then treating with gaseous ammonia until the product is devoid of carboxyl groups, to give a half amide, half ammonium salt which may then be dissolved in aq. sodium hydroxide, the sodium ion displacing the ammonium ion. The starch may be a hydroxyethylated corn starch and the composition may be an aq. dispersion. The compositions were used to size paper.ALSO:A method of sizing a fibrous web comprises applying to the web an aqueous dispersion of a composition comprising starch and a part amide, part salt of a styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer in which the salt cations are ammonium or alkali metal or of separate solutions of the starch and copolymer. The web may be a fibrous cellulosic web, e.g. a paper sheet containing ground wood and fortified rosin size or non-ground wood waste pulp, bleached western kraft and fortified rosin size.
