Abstract

Method of acid treating an underground formation involves the use of a composition containing a solution of a viscoelastic amido amine oxide surfactant and an HF-containing acid treatment solution. The composition typically contains from about 0.1 to about 8 weight percent surfactant solution and from about 92 to about 99.9 weight percent HF-containing acid treatment solution. The composition is pumped into the underground formation. As the acid reacts, the composition thickens and a self-conducting agent is formed in situ. As the acid is further consumed, fluid viscosity decreases and eventually returns to a low viscosity state, allowing easy purification. The process allows selective acid treatment of less permeable zones in the formation and more uniform stimulation of the hydrocarbon-containing formation.
