Abstract

What is described herein are antimicrobial compositions which are defined blends of a l,2-diol and pbenoxyethanol which show broad activity against bacteria, fungi and mold spores. This activity is potentiated by the addition thereto of small amounts of a co-biocide for which the blend acts as a delivery system for the otherwise water-insoluble co-biocide.

Description

AN IMBROBIAL COMPOSITIONS Field of the Invention This invention relates to antimicrobial compositions, and, more particularly, to a defined mixture of 1,2-diol and phenoxyethanol, optionally with a co-biocide, the compositions exhibiting broad activity against bacteria, fungi and spores of molds Background of the Invention Personal care products are presented in many different forms. They include creams, lotions, pastes, liquids, sprays, shampoos, gels, cloths, sticks, plates, powders and granules any or all of them are included for topical application to the skin including lesions and the mucosa that includes the lips. The products are usually designed to have a substantial half-life. The products need to be manufactured on site, possibly transported over a considerable distance to a warehouse or other storage facility before further transportation to a point of sale. The product can then last considerable time in the distributor's half-life prior to purchase and further storage by the user either for individual use or use in, for example, a hotel, workplace, institution or the like. All this storage will take place under REF: 175795 uncontrolled conditions including considerable variation in temperature. In order to maintain bacterial and fungal growth in such products at an acceptable level it is conventional practice for the products to contain a preservative. Many conservatives are available. The appropriate preservative has to be selected with respect to its effectiveness and its acceptability to be in contact with human or animal skin. With respect to its acceptability there are many laws and regulations, of the countries, that govern the maximum allowed content of preservative in products proposed for human use due to its possible toxic or other harmful effect. The need to control microbiological growth in personal care products is known to be particularly acute in water-based products such as non-ionic oil-in-water emulsions and in pre-impregnated wipes such as baby wipes. For example, U.S. Patent 6,607,738 describes a preservative system of iodopropynylbutyl carbamate (IPBC) and phenoxyethanol (PE) in a weight ratio of 1:90 to 1: 400 for use in personal care products. U.S. Patent 5,516,510 also discloses deodorizing active ingredients for reducing unpleasant odor caused by microorganisms which comprise a glyceryl monoalkyl ether in combination with an astringent and / or a naturally occurring deodorizer. European Patent 1206933 describes a preservative composition of caprylyl glycol (1,2-octanediol) and iodopropynyl butyl carbamate in a weight ratio of 0.1 to 500. U.S. Patent 5,733,362 is directed to a bacterial composition of methyl-4,5-trimethylene-4-isothiazoline-3-on; 3-iodo-2-propynyl butyl carbamate and 2-phenoxyethano1. European Patent 1238651 discloses that the activity of preservative mixtures of iodopropynyl butyl carbamate and phenoxyethanol, in a weight ratio of 1:90 to 1: 200, preferably 1: 100, can be enhanced by adding caprylyl glycol to it, in a weight ratio of the latter to the mixture from 0.1 to 500, preferably 1:55. Thus the formulation of caprylyl glycol, iodopropynyl butyl carbamate and phenoxyethanol has proportions by weight of each of 55: 1: 100 to 200: 1: 400, respectively. Personal care formulations contain 0.1-30% caprylyl glycol, preferably 0.5%; with 0.001-1% of IPBC, preferably 0.001-0.01%; and with phenoxyethanol of 0.1-3%, preferably 0.5-1%.
The Japanese Patent Application NO. 11045504 describes an antiseptic microbicide and compositions thereof which contain 1, 2-alkanediol. These compositions effectively reduce the required dose of conventional antiseptic microbicides such as paraben, benzoic acid and the like. The 1,2-alkanediol in it can be mixed with a photosensitizer, benzoic acid or its salt, phenoxyethanol or 4-isopropyl-3-methylphenol. However, there is no description of suitable mixtures of 1,2-alkanediol and phenoxyethanol in proportions of predetermined weights and HLB values, which can provide water-insoluble biocides such as IPBC in aqueous personal care systems in a relatively high concentration of such biocides. These and other references of the prior art in this field are concerned with the problem that many antibacterials such as IPBC have limited aqueous solubility in personal care systems.; particularly at the high concentrations required for effective antimicrobial activity. In this way, in very low concentrations they remain in solution but do not contribute much activity as desired for these products. Accordingly, it is desired to provide a mixture of 1,2-diol and phenoxyethanol in a predetermined ratio and value of HLB which can deliver water-insoluble biocides in an aqueous personal care system in relatively high concentrations to thereby provide more activity effective conservative in such systems. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION What is described herein is an antimicrobial composition which is active against bacteria, yeasts and fungal spores, which consists essentially of, by weight, (a) 40-60% of a 1,2- diol selected from the group consisting of 1,2-pentanediol, 1,2-hexanediol and 1,2-octanediol; (b) 40-60% phenoxyethanol; and (c) 0-10% of a co-biocide selected from the group consisting of sorbic acid, benzoic acid, dibromodicyanobutane, iodopropynylbutyl carbamate and 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one.
