Description

STRENGTH-RESISTANT STRUCTURES BUILT IN A FOLDABLE WAY BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Field of the Invention The present invention relates generally to a force-resistant structure or support and, more particularly, to a force-resistant structure or support constructed in a collapsible manner from one or more collapsible cartridges and especially suitable for use as a support for pallets or groceries. Brief Discussion of Related Matter A pallet is used primarily to accommodate mechanized volume handling and transportation of products. Typically, a pallet comprises a raised, flat upper surface to support a load, such as goods, containers, or packages, a sufficient distance above the ground or floor such that the pliers of a load elevator can be inserted below the load. the upper surface to move the platform with the entire load in it from one place to another. Traditionally, most pallets have been made from pieces of wood, specifically softwood, assembled with metal fasteners such as nails or screws. However, a number of problems are faced current users of conventional wooden pallets. The high cost of making and repairing wooden pallets has subtracted from the overall cost effectiveness of flooring shipments. Wood pallets are heavy, bulky and difficult to handle, and empty wooden pallets require substantial storage space. It is especially expensive to transport empty wooden pallets by train or truck for re-use. To save costs, conventional timber pallets purchased and used by shippers are ordinarily returned to the shipper for re-use, but since wooden pallets are heavy, bulky and difficult to handle, they are inconvenient to store and relatively expensive to return to the shipper . If the wooden pallet is not reused, it must be disposed of properly. Generally speaking, landfill sites or other waste disposal sites do not accept wood pallets as such; instead, the pallets must first be reduced either by converting into sawdust or pre-burned to disposition. Sawing adds significant cost to the disposal of wooden pallets, and burning wooden pallets is often prohibited by environmental regulations. In some instances, used wooden pallets can be recovered by pallet recyclers. Waste pickers who recover unwanted wood pallets usually accept only certain sizes of wood pallets and, most commonly, charge a fee for their recovery. After repair or rebuild, the recycler may try to re-sell the used wooden pallets. The market for recycled wood pallets is limited, however, due to the fact that many retailers refuse to receive goods transported on recycled wooden pallets due to the lack of any standard regulating the quality of repair or reconstruction of pallets. wood used. Products sent internationally even on new wooden pallets are subject to increasing regulations requiring various forms of chemical treatment of wood to prevent infestation and transport of insects and parasites. Pallets constructed of plastic or metal have been proposed, but plastic and metal pallets have many of the same disadvantages as wooden pallets including being heavy, bulky and difficult to handle, being costly and inconvenient to transport, store and dispose of same, and being incompatible with the conservation of the environment. In view of the various drawbacks to pallets made of wood, plastic or metal, it would be desirable to build a pallet from a material other than wood, plastic or metal, while maintaining many of the desirable characteristics generally associated with pallets made to from wood, plastic or metal to provide a pallet that is lighter in weight, less expensive, stronger, simplified construction, easier and less expensive to transport and store, which requires less storage space, which is more easily recyclable or discard- and that minimizes the environmental impact. A pallet constructed from easily recyclable material such as corrugated cardboard would be especially desirable. In warehouses and retail stores, separate receptacles are commonly provided to collect, compact and / or store recyclable materials, such as cartons and plastics. Recyclable materials can be recovered, and often sold, and recycled into new materials and / or products. Corrugated paperboard, which is particularly suitable for recycling, is typically formed as a layered or composite structure comprising a corrugated medium sandwiched between coating sheets. The corrugated medium forms a series of interconnected arcs providing substantial structural strength. For example, a sheet of corrugated cardboard held in a vertical position can support a weight many times greater than its own. Platforms made of corrugated cardboard have been proposed including pallets constructed from corrugated cartridges as represented by patent US 6,029,582, granted to Oglivie, Jr., and collaborators. In many conventional corrugated pallets, the vertical supports for the raised upper surface of the pallets are fastened with external fasteners, including adhesive fasteners such as glue or mechanical fasteners such as staples or clips, and are not held by the cartridges themselves . Since one Single pallet ordinarily includes a plurality of vertical supports, the need to apply an external fastener to each vertical support adds to the cost, time, labor and complexity involved in constructing or assembling the pallet. Moreover, cardboard pallets on which the vertical supports are fastened with external fasteners are usually lacking in the torsional strength. External fasteners also introduce undesirable materials to the pallet, and fasteners can limit or complicate the pallet's recycling capacity. Some cardboard pallets rely on frictional clamping of a top member of the pallet, which defines the raised upper surface, with a lower member of the pallet, and such friction clips lend little or no support or torsional strength to the structure of the global platform. Many conventional cardboard pallets do not have full perimeter support for the raised top surface. Consequently, the force from a load carried on the raised upper surface can cause the raised upper surface to move away in areas where the load is not directly supported by vertical supports of the pallet. Some conventional cardboard pallets can not be constructed or assembled in a collapsible manner from a single carton but instead require that at least two foldable cartridges be assembled and then clamped together with external fasteners. Some cardboard pallets they try to duplicate the design of conventional wooden pallets, and these pallets are usually both heavy and expensive despite being made of cardboard. Solid sheets of cardboard known as slip sheets are sometimes interposed between a load and a horizontal surface, such as the ground or floor, on which the load is supported. The sliding sheet is typically larger in peripheral size than the base design of the load therein in this manner by having an exposed marginal edge of the sliding sheet which can be held to slide the sliding sheet with the load therein. along the horizontal surface. Sliding sheets are not structurally or functionally similar to pallets. A grocery support is a type of packaging used conventionally in transporting products. Conventional grocery stands are ordinarily made from foam material, and similar problems that arise with regard to the provision of wood, plastic and metal pallets also arise after the shelf life of a grocery support has ended. Additionally, the foam material of a conventional grocery carrier can be susceptible to crumbling after a high impact, a feature that can lead to damage to both the grocery carrier and the product being transported. The lack of a foam recycling program adds so much to the cost of grocery stores and has caused that several industries use grocery supports to look for groceries that can be made of an alternative foam material while maintaining the positive characteristics associated with foam materials. The need exists, therefore, for improved strength constructed structures or strength supports constructed from one or more collapsible cartridges, preferably corrugated cartridges, and especially suitable for use as a pallet or as a support. groceries SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION A strength-built structure constructed in a collapsible manner comprises a top member and a bottom member each formed as a cartridge of a piece of sheet material or formed together as a one-piece cartridge of sheet material. DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS A strength-resistant structure or support 10 constructed or foldably assembled in accordance with the present invention is illustrated in Figure 1. The strength-resistant structure 10 comprises a first or upper member 12 and a member second or lower 13 assembled to the upper member 12. Prior to being constructed or assembled in a collapsible manner, the upper member 12 is in an unfolded condition comprising a first or upper member cartridge 14 as illustrated in Figure 2. Prior to be constructed or assembled in a collapsible manner, the lower member 13 is in an unfolded condition comprising a second or lower member cartridge 15 as illustrated in Figure 3. The cartridges 14 and 15 are each plain or flat in the non-conforming condition. folded, each cartridge 14 and 15 being formed integrally and unitarily or monolithically as a single piece of sheet material. Preferably, the sheet material from which the cartridges 14 and 15 are made is cardboard and, most preferably, corrugated cardboard. However, thermal plastics and ductile metals could be used for the sheet material. The cartridges 14 and 15 can each be cut in a suitable manner from the sheet material, such as by die cutting or die cutting. The cartridges 14 and 15 can be treated in various ways to make them suitably resistant to moisture and water. The cartridges 14 .y can be made from virgin materials or recycled materials. The cartridges 14 and 15 can be manufactured at the site of construction and / or use of the strength-resistant structure 10. The cartridges 14 and 15 made of cardboard sheet material are easily and routinely recyclable while maintaining many of the characteristics desirable materials less easily recyclable such as wood, metal and various plastics. Figure 4 illustrates a corrugated cardboard 16 from which cartridges 14 and 15 are preferably made. The corrugated cardboard 16 comprises a corrugated medium 17 maintained or trapped between covering sheets 18. The corrugated medium 17, which is typically made of short fiber paper, is formed with folds or recesses forming interconnected arcs. The folds or recesses extend longitudinally along parallel lines of corrugation as shown by the arrows in Figure 4. The arcs are typically glued to the cover sheets 18, which are normally made of puncture-resistant paper. Corrugated cardboard used for cartridges 14 and 15 can be manufactured in various ways. The corrugated cardboard used for the cartridges 14 and 15 can be treated in various ways including chemical firing processes, surface treatment including but not limited to flame treatment, and / or coating processes. As explained further below, each cartridge 14 and 15 have folding portions along crease or crease lines defined or formed in the cartridges for folding construction or assembly of the upper and lower members 12 and 13. Each cartridge 14 and 15 is provided, where necessary, with cutting lines creating separable edges in the cartridges for various purposes including to define or form the collapsible portions and / or other structural elements, and / or to allow for or facilitate folding of the collapsible portions. The cutting lines can be formed as full cuts extending entirely through the thickness of the sheet material to form completely cut separable edges. Alternatively, the cutting lines can be formed as partial cuts, such as perforations or score lines, extending partially through the thickness of the sheet material to form separable, partially cut edges that can be completely cut during the construction or folding assembly. Either or both cartridges 14 and 15 may have one or more cutout windows of various shapes and sizes where the sheet material is completely removed or completely removed during the construction or folding assembly to serve various purposes. Some of the purposes that can be served by the provision of clipping windows include simplifying the manufacture or preparation of the cartridges., facilitating the construction or folding assembly of the strength-resistant structure, allowing for interlocking between portions of the same or different cartridges, and reducing the weight when possible without sacrificing the necessary structural strength. The peripheral dimensions and the thickness of the cartridges 14 and 15 and the location of the fold lines, cutting lines and clipping windows may vary according to the characteristics desired for the strength resistant structure 10 based on its intended application. The upper member 12 and its cartridge 14, as best shown in Figure 2, comprise a base panel of upper member 20 demarcated or circumscribed by a plurality of side edges including first side edges 21 and second opposite side edges 22. The member upper 12 further comprises at least one side portion 23 foldably connected to the base panel 20 along one edge thereof and / or at least one locking or retaining element 24 foldably connected to the base panel 20 along a side edge of it. The base panel 20 may have various peripheral configurations and / or sizes as defined or circumscribed by the first side edges 21 and the second side edges 22 according to the dimensions desired for the strength resistant structure 10. In the case of the strength-resistant structure 10, the base panel 20 has a rectangular peripheral configuration. Accordingly, the first side edges 21 are longer than the second side edges 22 and are parallel to each other. The edges second laterals 22 are parallel to each other and are perpendicular to the first lateral edges 21. Upper member 12 is illustrated with opposite side portions 23, with a side portion 23 foldably connected to base panel 20 along each side edge first 21. The fold lines 25 preferably extend over the entire or substantially entire length of the first side edges 21. It should be appreciated that a side portion 23 may be provided along any or both of the first side edges 21 and / or along either or both of the second side edges 22. The top member 12 is illustrated with elements retainer 24, with at least one retaining element 24 foldably connected to the base panel 20 along each second lateral edge 22. In particular, the upper member 12 is shown with two retaining elements 24 connected to each other. foldable manner to the base panel 20 along each second side edge 22. Each retaining element 24 is formed in the cartridge 14 as an extension to the base panel 20 and is foldably connected to the base panel 20 in a line from fold or crease of retaining element 26 defined in the cartridge 14 along the second lateral edge 22. It should be appreciated that the upper member 12 may have one or more retaining elements 24 along either or both of the second side edges 22 and / or either or both of the first side edges 21. In the case of the strength resistant structure 10, each second side edge 22 has its retaining elements 24 located directly opposite the retaining elements 24 on the second side edge. opposite 22. It should be appreciated, however, that a side edge may have one or more retention elements 24 located at different opposite locations from one or more retention elements 24 at the opposite side edge such that the opposite retention elements do not they have to be exactly or directly opposite each other. As further explained below, each retaining element 24 of the upper member 12 is interleaved with a corresponding access opening in a side wall of the lower member 13 when the upper and lower members are foldably constructed and assembled together. Each side portion 23 comprises a side wall 28 and a tuck flap 29. However, it should be appreciated that the pairs of sidewall flaps 32 and access openings 34 in a side wall 28 do not have to be located directly or exactly opposite the pairs of flaps of side wall 32 and access openings 34 in the opposite side wall 28. In other words, the access opening 34 susceptible to being exposed in a side wall 38 by folding one or more side wall fins 32 does not have to be directly or exactly opposite an opposite access opening 34 capable of being exposed on the opposite side wall 28 by folding one or more side wall flaps 32. As further described further ahead, each access opening 34 in the upper member 12 is interspersed with a corresponding retaining element of the upper member 13 when the upper and lower members are foldably constructed and assembled together. Each sidewall flap 32 has an adjacent inner side edge, close to or adjacent to the fold line 25 and an adjacent outer side edge, near or adjacent the fold line 30. The fold line 33 for each sidewall flap 32 extends perpendicularly between the inner and outer side edges of the sidewall flap. Each side wall fin 32 is foldably connected to the corresponding side wall 28 along the fold line 33 and is formed or defined in the cartridge 14 by a cut line, which also forms the access opening 34. Where an access opening 34 is exposed in its entirety by folding a single lateral wall flap 32 relative to the corresponding side wall 28., the side wall flap 32 is preferably about the same size as the access opening 34, and the access opening is circumscribed by the fold line 33 and by the edges resulting from cutting the cartridge 14 to form the flap of lateral wall. Where an access opening 34 is exposed by folding two side wall fins 32 relative to the corresponding side wall 28, as illustrated for the top member 12, the two side wall fins 32 together preferably are about the same size as the access opening 34, and the access opening is circumscribed by the fold lines 33 of both side wall fins 32 and by the edges resulting from cutting the cartridge 14 to form the side wall fins. In the upper member 12, each side wall flap 32 is about half the size of the corresponding access opening 34, and the side wall flaps 32 of each pair are collapsible along their fold lines 33 in opposing each other to expose the access opening. The sidewall fins 32 of the upper member 12 could be configured with locking tabs or formations for interlocking fastening with openings or locking structures on the upper or lower members as described in more detail below for the sidewall fins of the member. bottom 13. Each retaining element 24 comprises a retaining flap 36 and at least one wing 37 foldably connected to one end of the retaining flap. The retaining flap 36 has an inner side edge foldably connected to the base panel 20 along the corresponding retention element fold line 26. The wing 37 is foldably connected to the retention flap 36 in a fold line or wing crease 38 extending perpendicular to the fold line 26. The wing fold line 38 extends from one end of the line of folding 26 to an outer lateral edge of the retaining element 24 which is parallel to the second side edge 22 and the fold line 26. The outer side edge of the retaining element 24 defines an outer side edge of the retention tab 36, parallel to the inner side edge of the retention tab, and defines an outer side edge of the retention tab. wing 37. The outer side edge of the wing 37 extends laterally from the fold line 38, and the wing 37 has an inner side edge extending laterally from the fold line 38 in parallel with the second side edge. 22 and the outer side edge of the wing but close to the fold line 26. The wing 37 also has an end edge extending perpendicularly between its outer and inner side edges in parallel with the fold line 38. The wing 37 can be configured with a tongue or locking formation 39 along its edge for reception in a slot or locking opening in the lower member 13 as described below. The fold line 26 for each retaining element 24 may comprise separate folds or wrinkles formed in the cartridge 14 and spaced apart or spaced apart by a desired distance. The upper member 12 is illustrated with each retaining element 24 comprising more than one wing 37. In particular, each retaining element 24 of the upper member 12 is illustrated as comprising two wings 37 extending laterally in opposite directions from the opposite ends of the body. the retaining flap 36, with each wing 37 being foldably connected to the retaining flap 36 along a wing fold line 38. The wings 37 of each retaining element 24 are essentially mirror images of themselves with their fold lines 38 being parallel. The lower member 13 and its cartridge 15, as best shown in Figure 3, comprises a lower member base panel 120 demarcated or circumscribed by a plurality of side edges in correspondence with the side edges of the upper member base panel 20. The base panel 120 has opposite first side edges 121 in correspondence with the first side edges 21 of the upper member base panel 20 and second opposite side edges 122 in correspondence with the second side edges 22 of the upper member base panel 20. The lower member 13 further comprises at least one side portion 123 foldably connected to the base panel 120 along a side edge thereof for providing an access opening in the lower member 13 for interbreeding with a retaining element 23 in the upper member 12 and / or the lower member 13 comprises at least one locking or latching element 124 foldably connected to the base panel 120 along a side edge thereof to enclose with an access opening 34 in the upper member 12. The base panel 120 is similar to the base panel 20 and may have various peripheral configurations and / or sizes according to the dimensions of the upper member base panel 20.
The side portion 123 of the lower member 13 is located along a side edge of the base panel 120 corresponding to the side edge of the base panel 20 associated with a retaining element 24. An access opening 134 in the side wall 128 of the side portion 123 is located in correspondence with the retaining element 24. The lower member 13 is illustrated with opposite side portions 123, with a side portion 123 foldably connected to the base panel 120 along each side edge second 122. Each side portion 123 is similar to the side portion 23 and is foldably connected to the base panel 120 in a crease line or inner sidewall crease 125 formed or defined in the cartridge 15 along the second side edge. 122. Each side portion 123 comprises a side wall 128 foldably connected to the base panel 120 in the corresponding fold line 125, and a tuck flap 129 connects foldably gives the side wall 128 a fold line or crease of the tuck flap or outer side wall 130 as explained above for the side portion 23. The access opening 134 in the side wall 128 of the side portion 123 can be exposed by folding one or more sidewall flaps 132, each sidewall flap 132 being foldably connected to sidewall 128 along a sidewall flapline 133. The bottom member 13 is illustrated with two access openings 134 in the side wall 128 of each side portion 123, with each access opening 134 being capable of being exposed by folding two side wall fins 132 relative to the corresponding side wall 128 as described above for the access opening 34. The apertures of access 134 in a side wall 128 are located in correspondence with the retaining elements 24 along a side edge 22 of the base panel 20, and the access openings 134 in the other side wall 128 are located in correspondence with the elements of retainer 24 along the opposite side edge 22 of the base panel 20. Each sidewall fin 132 is illustrated as having a tab or locking formation 42 along its inner side edge to be received in a slot or opening 43 in the base panel 120 when the lower member 13 is constructed in a collapsible manner as further explained below. It should be appreciated, however, that the locking tab 42 may be provided along an outer side edge of the side wall flap 132 and that the opening 43 may be provided in the buckle panel 129 to receive the locking tab 42. during foldable construction of the lower member 13 as will be apparent from the description expressed below. It should be appreciated that the side wall fins 32 of the upper member 12 could be provided with similar locking tabs or formations and that similar slots or openings can be provided in the base panel 20 or, more preferably, the tuck panel 29 of the upper member 12, for receiving the locking tabs or formations when the upper member 12 is constructed in a collapsible manner. The retaining element 124 of the lower member 13 is foldably connected to the base panel 120 together with a side edge of the base panel 120 corresponding to a side edge of the base panel 20 associated with an access opening 34, and the retaining element 124 is located along this side edge of base panel 120 in correspondence with the location of access opening 34. Lower member 13 is illustrated with opposing retention elements 124, having two retention elements 124 connected foldably to the base panel 120 along each first side edge 121 in correspondence with the access openings 34 of the member upper 12. Each retaining element 124 is similar to the retaining element 24 and comprises a retaining flap 136 foldably connected to the side edge of the base panel 120 along a fold line or wrinkle of retaining element 126 and at least one wing 137 foldably connected to the retention flap 136 along a wing fold line 138. Each retention element 124 is illustrated as having two wings 137 foldably connected to the retention flap 136. along fold lines 138 as described above for retaining element 24. Lower member 13 further includes one or more fins interior support 46, each support flap 46 being foldably connected to the base panel 120 along a fold line or support flap 47 and being disposed within the confines of the perimeter of the base panel 120. Each inner support flap 46 comprises a first or attached fin segment 48 foldably connected to the base panel 120 along the fold line 47 and a second or detachable wing segment 49 foldably connected to the flap segment. joined 48 along a fold or crease line of segment 50 defined in support flap 46 perpendicular to fold line 47, but with detachable flap segment 49 being separable from base panel 120. Preferably , the detachable wing segment 49 is of greater length than the joined wing segment 48. The entire support flap 46 is foldable relative to the base panel 120 along the fold line 47, and the segment d The detachable fin 49 is therefore independently foldable along the segment fold line 50 relative to the attached fin segment 48 and the base panel 120 to form a vertical support structure within the interior of the structure resistant to force 10 as explained further below. The support flap 46 has an inner side edge with a joined edge portion foldably connected to the base panel 120 along the fold line 47 and a removable edge portion that can be separated from the base panel 120 along the detachable wing segment 49. The segment fold line 50 meets the fold line 47 where the attached edge portion of the inner side edge is located with the separable edge portion of the inner side edge. The support flap 46 has a removable outer side edge of the base panel 120 along the joined and detachable wing segments 48 and 49, and the outer side edge of the flap 46 is mainly parallel to the inner side edge of the flap. 46. The support flap 46 has opposite end edges extending, preferably perpendicularly, between the outer and inner side edges of the flap 46, and the outer corners of the end edges can be beveled or angled. The end edges of the flap 46 are separable from the base panel 120. The end edges, the outer side edge and the detachable edge portion of the inner side edge of the inner support flap 46 can be made removable from the base panel 120 by forming an appropriate cut line on the cartridge 15. The inner support flap 46 is arranged on the base panel 120 with its outer and inner side edges and fold line 47 parallel to the second side edges 122 and with its end edges and segment fold line 50 perpendicular to the second side edges 122. However, the inner support flap 46 can be arranged on the base panel 120 in several ways. ways The detachable wing segment 49 can be configured with a tongue or locking formation 51 along the separable edge portion of its inner side edge for reception in a lock slot or opening 43 in the base panel 120 as further described. later. The lower member 13 is illustrated with a plurality of inner support flaps 46 including a first pair of central inner support flaps 46A located toward the center of the base panel 120, a second pair of central interior support flaps 46B located toward the center of the base panel 120, outer inner support flaps 46C located respectively between the central fins 46A and the second side edges 122 of the base panel 120, and outer inner support flaps 46D located respectively between the central fins 46B and the second side edges 122 of the base panel 120. During the formation of the support flaps 46A, 46B, 46C and 46D in the cartridge 15 by cutting, cut-out windows can result in the cartridge 15 between support fins 46A and 46C and between support fins 46B and 46D as seen in Figure 3. The crease lines 47 for the central fins 46A are parallel to each other and to the second side edges 122. The detachable fin segments 49 of the central fins 46A extend from the joined fin segments 48 thereof to a first side edge 121. In the condition not folded for central fins 46A, the segment fold lines 50 of the fins 46A extend inward toward each other and are aligned or substantially longitudinally aligned with each other in the plane of the cartridge 15. The central fins 46A are foldable outwards or upwardly from the base panel 120 in opposition or in a direction away from each other along its fold lines 47 to assume a position where the fins 46A are parallel or substantially parallel to each other and perpendicular or substantially perpendicular to the panel of base 120 as seen in Figure 5. The detachable fin segments 49 of the fins 46A are subsequently foldable independently inward toward each other along their fold lines 50 relative to their bonded fin segments. 48 and the base panel 120 to assume an angled position where the separable wing segments 49 extend to each other and are arranged in a angle to the joined fin segments 48 as seen in Figure 6. In the angled position, the attached fin segments 48 remain parallel or substantially parallel to each other, the attached fin segments 48 and the detachable fin segments 49 remain perpendicular or substantially perpendicular to the base panel 120, and the separable wing segments 49 define a right angle or substantially a right angle with their joined wing segments 48. When the separable wing segments 49 of the wings 46a are folded to the angled position , the tabs 51 in the detachable wing segments 49 can be inserted in the opening 43 located in the base panel 120 between the attached fin segments 48 of the fins 46A, and the locking tabs 51 of both detachable wing segments 49 can be inserted in the same opening 43 for clamping the separable wing segments with the base panel 120 as shown in Figure 6. The opening 43 for the locking tabs 51 of the fins 46A is located in line with or generally in line with fold lines 50 of the fins 46A as seen in Figure 3. The interlocking fastener between the separable fin segments 49 and the base panel 120 can be releasable in that the locking tabs 51 can be removable from the opening 43. The detachable wing segments 49 of the support flaps 46A are of sufficient length such that ends of the separable wing segments 49 overlap each other when the seconds detachable fin elements 49 are folded to the angled position. The end of the detachable wing segment 49 of a support flap 46A may be provided with a fastening element or formation 52, and the end of the detachable flap segment 49 of the other support flap 46A may be provided with a fastener receiver 53 for cooperative bonding with the fastening element 52 to clamp the overlapping ends of the separable fin segments 49 together as illustrated in Figure 6.
Cooperative linkage between the fastener 52 and the fastener receiver 53 may be a releasable cooperative link to allow the overlapping ends of the detachable fin segments 49 to be selectively released from each other. The second pair of central inner support flaps 46B is similar to the first pair of central inner support flaps 46A except that the detachable flap segments 49 of the central flaps 46B extend from their joined flap segments 48 toward the lateral edge first opposed 121 of the base panel 120. The fold lines 47 for the central fins 46B are aligned or substantially aligned longitudinally with the respective fold lines 47 of the central fins 46A. As illustrated in Figures 5 and 6, the central fins 46B are foldable outwardly or upwardly from the base panel 120 along their fold lines 47 in a manner similar to the central fins 46A and, thereafter, the separable fin segments 49 of the fins 46B are foldable inwardly with respect to each other along their fold lines 50 to the angled position in a manner similar to the separable fin segments 49 of the fins 46A. In the angled position, the attached fin segments 48 of the central fins 46B are co-leveled or substantially co-leveled with the respective joined fin segments 48 of the central fins 46A which have been folded upwards from of the base panel 120. When the detachable fin segments 49 of the central fins 46B are folded to the angled position, the detachable wing segments 49 of the fins 46B are parallel or substantially parallel to the fin flap segments 49 of the fins. 46A which have been folded to the angled position. As described for the fins 46A, locking tabs 51 on the detachable fin segments 49 of the central fins 46B can be inserted into the opening 43 located in the base panel 120 between the joined fin segments 48 of the fins 46B. Overlapping ends of the detachable wing segments 49 of the central support flaps 46B can be held together by cooperatively linking a fastener 52 in a detachable flap segment with a fastener receiver 53 in the detachable flap segment. as described for central fins 46A. The fold lines 47 for the inner support fins 46C are parallel or substantially parallel with the fold lines 47 for the central fins 46A. In the unfolded condition for the inner inner support flaps 46C and the central fins 46A, the segment fold lines 50 for the fins 46C are aligned or substantially aligned longitudinally with the segment fold lines 50 of the fins 46A in the of the cartridge 15. As shown in Fig. 5, the support flaps 46C are foldable upwards or outwards from the base panel 120 along their fold lines 47 in a manner similar to that described above for the central fins 46A, but with each fin 46C folding upwards in a direction towards the fin adjacent central 46A. Accordingly, the fins 46C are foldable upwards or outwards from the base panel 120 in one direction towards the other to assume a position where the fins 46C are parallel or substantially parallel with the fins 46A which have been have been folded upwards from the base panel 120. As shown in Figure 6, the separable wing segments 49 of the fins 46C are subsequently foldable along their fold lines 50 relative to their bonded fin segments. 48 and base panel 120 to assume the angled position. When the separable fin segments 49 of the fins 46C are folded to the angled position, the separable fin segments 49 of the fins 46C are folded toward the corresponding lateral edge 122 of the base panel 120. When the separable fin segments 49 of the fins 46C are in the angled position, are co-leveled or substantially co-leveled with the separable fin segments 49 of the central fins 46A which have been folded to the angled position. The locking tabs 51 on the detachable wing segments 49 of the fins 46C can be inserted into respective openings 43 located in the base panel 120 between the joined fin segments 48 of the fins 46C and the side edges 122 for clamping the detachable fin segments 49 of the fins 46C to the base panel 120 as explained above for the fins 46A. The openings 43 receiving the locking tabs 51 of the fins 46C are generally in line with the fold lines 50 of the fins 46C and can also receive the locking tabs 42 from the adjacent side wall fins 132. The fins external support 46D are structurally and operatively similar to the support flaps 46B but with respect to the central aetas 46B. The outer side edges of the outer inner support flaps 46C and 46D may be provided with notches or recesses to accommodate the tuck flaps 129 therein during construction and collapsible assembly of the lower member as further described below. Figures 5-14 illustrate the steps involved in constructing and foldingly assembling the upper and lower members 12 and 13 to obtain the strength-resistant structure 10. It will be appreciated, however, that the sequence of steps involved in folding construction and assembly of the upper and lower members 12 and 13 toward the strength resistant structure 10 may vary from the sequence of steps described and illustrated herein. Figure 5 illustrates the lower member 13 and its cartridge 15 initially folded from the non-folded condition, showing all of the inner support flaps 46A, 46B, 46C and 46D folded along their respective fold lines 47 upwardly or inwardly from the base panel 120 to an initial folded position perpendicular or substantially perpendicular to the base panel 120 as described above. In this initial folded position, the support flaps 46A and 46C are parallel or substantially parallel to each other, and the support flaps 46B and 46D are parallel or substantially parallel to each other. Each support flap 46A is co-leveled or substantially co-leveled with a corresponding support flap 46B, and each support flap 46C is co-leveled or substantially co-leveled with a corresponding support flap 46D. Figure 6 illustrates the lower member 13 and its cartridge 15 with the support flaps 46A, 46B, 46C and 46D each folded to a subsequent folded position where the detachable flap segments 49 of the support flaps are folded along the fold lines 50 in relation to their joined fin segments 48 and relative to the base panel 120 to drop the angled position as explained above. In this position, each support flap has its detachable wing segment 49 disposed at a right angle or substantially at a right angle to its attached flap segment 48, with both the attached and detachable wing segments 48 and 49 remaining perpendicular or substantially perpendicular. to the base panel 120. The joined fin segments 48 of the support flaps 46A and 46C remain parallel or substantially parallel to each other but the separable wing segments 49 of the support flaps 46A and 46C are now co-leveled or substantially co-leveled. The ends of the separable wing segments 49 of the support flaps 46A overlap each other and their locking tabs 51 are received together in the opening 43 located for this purpose in the base panel 120 to enclose the separable flap segments of the flaps. support flaps 46A with the base panel 120. In addition, the fastening element 52 in the detachable flap segment 49 of a support flap 46A is cooperatively linked to the fastener element receiver 53 in the detachable flap segment 49 of the other support flap 46A, such as by puncturing the fastening element 52 towards or through the receiver 53, to enclose the support flaps 46A with each other. Together, the interlocking support flaps 46A form a vertical support structure having an angled C-shaped configuration. The support flaps 46B are folded and crisscrossed in a manner similar to the support flaps 46A. The locking tabs 51 on the detachable fin segments 49 of the support flaps 46B are received in the opening 43 located for this purpose in the base panel 120. The overlapping ends of the detachable flap segments 49 of the flaps of 46B are held by cooperatively linking the clamping element 52 to the detachable wing segment 49 of a fin support 46B with clamp receiver 53 in the detachable wing segment 49 of the other support flap 46B. The enclosed support flaps 46B form a vertical support structure having an angled C-shaped configuration that is essentially a mirror image of the C-shaped configuration formed by the interlocking support flaps 46A. The support flaps 46C have their locking tabs 51 received in the openings 43 located for this purpose in the base panel 120. The support flaps 46D similarly have their locking tabs 51 received in the openings 43 located for this purpose in the base panel 120. In the angled position, each support flap 46C forms a vertical support structure having an L-configuration with the detachable flap segments 49 thereof defining a leg of the L-shaped configuration extending towards side edge 122 adjacent or corresponding. Each support flap 46D similarly forms a vertical support structure having an L-shaped configuration that is essentially a mirror image of the corresponding support flap 46C. When the support flaps 46A, 46B, 46C and 46D are in the subsequent folded position illustrated in Figure 6, the outer side edges of the support flaps can now be considered top edges of the support flaps since the support flaps are now vertically oriented with relation to the base panel 120 which is oriented horizontally. Figure 7 illustrates the side portions 123 of the lower member 13 and its cartridge 15 folded along its fold lines 125 outwardly or upward relative to the base panel 120 to assume an initial folded position for the side portions 123 where each side portion 123 is perpendicular or substantially perpendicular to the base panel 120. In the initial folded position for the side portions 123, the side portions 123 are also parallel or substantially parallel to each other. Each side portion 123 remains flat or flat in the initial folded position, with the side wall 128 and the shoulder 129 of the side portion 123 being co-leveled or substantially co-level. The lower member 13 and its cartridge 15 are illustrated in Figure 8 with its side wall fins 132 of each side wall 128 folded along its fold lines 133 relative to its side wall 128 and to the base panel 120 for exposing access openings 134 in the side walls 128. The side wall fins 132 fold inward toward what would eventually be the interior of the strength resistant structure 10. Each pair of side wall fins 132 are folded in opposition or in one direction out from the other to expose the corresponding access opening 134. The side wall fins 132 are arranged perpendicular or substantially perpendicular to the base panel 120 and are arranged at an angle straight or substantially a right angle with the corresponding side wall 128. The side wall fins 132 for each side wall 128 are parallel or substantially parallel to each other, and all of the side wall fins 132 are perpendicular or substantially perpendicular to the attached fin segments 48 of the inner support fins 46A, 46B, 46C and 46D. The lower edges of the side wall fins 132 rest on the base panel 120, and the locking tabs 42 on the side wall fins 132 are received in their respective openings 43 provided for this purpose in the base panel 120. When the side wall fins 132 are in their folded position as shown in Figure 8, the outer side edges of the side wall fins 132 can now be considered top edges of the side wall fins 132 and the interior wall edges of the side walls 132. side wall flaps can now be considered bottom edges of the side wall flaps since the side wall flaps 132 are now oriented vertically relative to the base panel 120. The ends of the detachable flap segments 49 of the support flaps 46C and 46C are respectively overlapped by a corresponding side wall flap 132, and the locking tabs 42 for these side wall flaps are rotated by a lateral wall flap 132. Eclipse in the same openings 43 receiving the locking tongues 51 of the detachable wing segments 49 of the support flaps 46C and 46D to clamp the wall fins in a manner of interlocking lateral 132 to the base panel 120 such that these side wall flaps are in effect also fastened in a manner of interlocking with the corresponding support flaps 46C and 46D. The upper edges of the side wall fins 132 that overlap the separable fin segments 49 are aligned or substantially aligned with the top edges formed by the notches in the respective separable fin segments to present an upper edge surface of greater thickness. thickness that is either the sidewall flap 132 or the detachable wing segment 49 alone. Figure 9 illustrates folding of the side portions 123 to a subsequent folded position in which the tuck flaps 129 are folded along their corresponding fold lines 130 relative to their corresponding side walls 128 and in an inward direction. of the strength-resistant structure 10. The tuck flaps 129 are folded relative to the corresponding side walls 128 to a position where the tuck flaps 129 are perpendicular or substantially perpendicular to the side walls 128 and are parallel or substantially parallel to each other. the base panel 120. In this position, the tuck flaps 129 are supported on the top edges of the sidewall flaps 132. In the bottom member 13, each tuck flap 129 is supported on the top edges of four sidewall flaps 132, two of which are they reinforce additionally by virtue of their association with the detachable fin segments 49 of the inner support fins 46C and 46D. The thicker upper edge surfaces formed where the upper edges of the sidewall fins 132 are aligned or substantially aligned with the upper edges formed by the notches in the detachable fin segments 49 of the fins 46C and 46D to provide greater support for the tuck wings 129 therein. Accordingly, the tuck flaps 129 are also supported on the fins 46C and 46D. Figure 9 also illustrates the retention elements 124 of the lower member 13 and its cartridge 15 folded into an initial folded position where the wings 137 of each retention element 124 are folded along their fold lines 138 down their fins retention 136. The wings 137 are folded from their corresponding retention flap 136 in a direction opposite to the initial fold direction of the side portions 123 of the base panel 120. In the initial folded position for the retention elements 124 , the wings 137 of each retention element 124 are parallel or substantially parallel to each other and are perpendicular or substantially perpendicular to the corresponding retention tab 136. Also, each retention element 124 has a perimeter along its retention tab 136. to fit within the perimeter of access openings 34 in the side walls 28 of the upper member 12.
Figure 10 illustrates the lower member 13 and its cartridge 15 folded as previously described and illustrates the upper member 12 and its cartridge 14 disposed on the lower member 13 after being folded in a manner similar to that previously described for the lower member 13. In particular, Figure 10 illustrates the upper member 12 and its cartridge 14 with the side portions 23 folded in a manner similar to the side portions 123 except that the side portions 23 are initially folded along fold lines 25 in one direction down relative to the base panel 20. The access openings 34 are exposed in the side walls 28 of the upper member 12 by folding the side wall flaps 32 relative to the side walls 28 as described for the access openings 134. The access openings 34 exposed in the side walls 28 of the upper member 12 are located in correspondence with the elements of r erecting 124 of the lower member 13. The tuck flaps 29 of the upper member 12 are folded inward from the side walls 28 to what would be the interior of the strength-resistant structure 10, and the sidewall flaps 32 are arranged between the base panel 20 and the tuck flaps 29. The inner wall edges of the side wall tabs 32 can now be considered top edges of the side wall tabs 32 and the outer wall edges of the side wall tabs 32. can now be considered top edges of the wall fins lateral 32 since the side wall fins 32 are now oriented vertically with respect to the base panel 20. The base panel 20 is supported on the upper edges of the side wall fins 32, and the bottom edges of the wall fins side 32 rest on the tuck flaps 29. The retainer elements 24 are initially folded in the same manner as previously described for retainer elements 124 except that the flaps 37 of retainer elements 24 are folded along their lines. fold 38 in an upward direction opposite to the folding direction for the wings 127 of retaining elements 124. The retaining elements 24 of the upper member 12 are located in correspondence with the access openings 134 in the lower member 13. The figure 11 illustrates the upper member 12 assembled on or on the lower member 13 in nested relation. The tuck flap fold lines 30 of the upper member 12 are positioned adjacent the first side edges 121 of the lower member 13, and the second side edges 22 of the upper member 12 are positioned adjacent the fold flap lines 130 of the lower member 13. The tuck flaps 29 of the upper member 12 are disposed in the base panel 120 and are confined between base panel 120 and the lower edges of the side wall fins 32. The base panel 20 is disposed in the tuck flaps 129, which are confined between the base panel 20 and the upper edges of the fins of side wall 132. The base panels 20 and 120 are parallel or substantially parallel to each other and the side walls 28 and 128 are perpendicular or substantially perpendicular to the base panels 20, 120. The base panel 20 rests or is supported on the upper edges of the inner support flaps 46A, 46B, 46C and 46D, which fit comfortably between the base panels 20 and 120. The side walls 28, 128 cooperate to form a peripheral sidewall along the perimeter of the base panels 20, 120. The cartridge 15 can be cut from the sheet material 16 such that the corrugation lines run parallel to the side edges 121. Consequently, the corrugation lines for the inner support flaps 46A, 46B 46C and 46D will run vertical and perpendicular or substantially perpendicular to the horizontal base panel 120 when the support flaps are folded upwardly from the base panel 12 0. In this manner, charges in the base panel 20 are supported by the support fins along the corrugation lines for increased load bearing strength. Figure 11 also shows the retention elements 24 and 124 folded to a subsequent folded position in which the retention flaps 36, 136 are folded along their fold lines 26, 126 to a position perpendicular or substantially perpendicular to the base panels 20, 120 such that the retaining flaps 36, 136 align with the openings of access 34, 134 located correspondingly. In particular, the retaining flaps 36 of the retaining elements 24 are folded along their fold lines 26 in a dard direction from the base panel 20 to align with the correspondingly located access openings 134 in the side walls 128 of the lower member 13. The retaining elements 124 are folded along their fold lines 126 upwardly from the base panel 120 to align with the access openings 34 located correspondingly on the side walls. 28 of the upper member 12. The perimeter presented by each retaining element 24, 124 along its retaining flap 36, 136 is slightly smaller than the perimeter of the aligned access opening 34, 134 and can be adjusted within the access opening aligned. A subsequent folded position for the retaining elements 24, 124 is shin Figure 12 where the wings 37, 137 of the retaining elements 24, 124 are folded along their fold lines 38, 138 inwards towards their fins. corresponding retention 36, 136 to define an acute angle with their corresponding retention flaps. This subsequent folded position for the retaining elements 24, 124 can be considered a collapsed position in which the retaining elements are able to fold towards the access openings 34, 134 located correspondingly.
The final fold of the retaining elements 24, 124 for interlocking in the manner of interlocking the upper and lower members 12 and 13 in nested relation and completing the collapsible construction and assembly of the force resistant structure 10 is illustrated in figures 13 and 14. As shin Figure 13, the retaining elements 24, 124 are folded along their fold lines 26, 126 relative to their base panels 20, 120 towards the interior of the strength-resistant structure. causing the retaining elements 24, 124 to pass into the access openings 34, 134 located correspondingly and towards the interior of the force-resistant structure, as allowed by the collapsed position of the retaining elements. The retaining elements 24 are folded along their fold lines 26 such that the retaining flaps 36 are abutting the tuck flaps 129. The retaining elements 124 are folded along their crease lines 126 such that the retaining wings 136 are abutting the tuck flaps 29. Subsequently, the wings 37, 137 of the retaining elements 24, 124 unfold from the collapsed position and are returned to a position perpendicular or substantially perpendicular to the retaining wings 36, 136 as illustrated in Figure 1 and illustrated in greater detail. detail in figure 14, which shows one of the retaining elements 124. As shown in figure 14, the wings 137 of the retaining elements 124 are unfolded from the collapsed position by unfolding the wings 137 along their respective fold lines 138 in opposition to each other in an upward direction. The end edges of the wings 137 can now be considered top edges of the wings 137 since the wings 137 extend vertically upwardly from the retaining wings 136, which are arranged on stiffening fins 29. The wings 37 of each retention element 24 unfolds in a similar manner but unfolds along its fold lines 38 in opposition to each other in a downward direction. Moreover, the locking tabs 39 on the wings 37 are received in the openings 43 provided in the base panel 120 along the side edges 122 to clamp the wings 37 to the base panel 120 in a manner of interlocking. The tabs 39 for the innermost wings 37 are received in the same openings 43 receiving the locking tabs 51 of the support flaps 46C and 46D. The innermost flaps 37 are in this way fastened in a manner of interlocking with the inner support flaps 46C and 46D as well as the side wall flaps 132 having their locking tabs 42 · received in the same opening as the tabs locking of the support flaps 46C and 46D. The end edges of the wings 37 can now be considered to be the lower edges of the wings 37 since the wings 37 extend vertically downwards from their retaining wings 36, which are disposed below the tuck flaps 129. accordingly, the tuck flaps 29 are maintained in a manner between the retaining flaps 136 and the base panel 120 with the base panel 20 being supported on the upper edges of the wings 137. The tuck flaps 129 are comfortably held between the base panel 20 and the fins of retention 36 with the lower edges of the wings 37 being supported on the base panel 120. The retention flaps 36, 136 are parallel or substantially parallel to the base panels 20, 120, and the wings 37, 137 are perpendicular or substantially perpendicular to the base panels 20, 120. The side wall flaps 32, 132 are also comfortably fitted between the base panels 20, 120 with the tuck flaps 29, 129 interposed comfortably between the side wall flaps and the base panels 20, 120. The inner support flaps 46A, 46B, 46C and 46D are comfortably adjusted between the base panels 20, 120. The upper member base panel 20 defines a raised upper surface of the estru 10 strength resistant frame to support a load on it. The access openings 34, 134 in the side walls 28, 128 provide communication with the interior of the strength resistant structure 10 for the insertion of a lifting mechanism, such as a pallet jack or pincers or lifting equipment such as a Charge elevator. The access openings 34, 134 are positioned to accommodate the lifting mechanisms of various lifting equipment, allowing the strength-resistant structure 10, with a load supported thereon, to be lifted and moved from place to place. An alternate first or upper member 212 and an alternate second or lower member 213 are illustrated in FIG. 15 prior to being constructed or assembled in a collapsible manner toward a force-resistant structure constructed in an alternative folding manner illustrated in FIG. 16. upper 212 and lower member 213 are formed together as an integral and unitary or monolithic one-piece cartridge 219 that is flat or plain in its non-folded condition shown in Figure 15. Structural strength, rigidity and integrity, including increased torsional strength and load-bearing strength, are improved in strength-resistant structures due to the portions of the upper and lower limbs that are interlocked, held or clamped to other portions, and / or provide vertical support for the upper member base panel are formed from the initial cartridges of sheet material and remain integral with the cartridges. Structural strength, rigidity and integrity, including torsional strength and load-bearing strength, are also enhanced in strength-resistant structures due to the comfortable fit of the wings, side wall fins and / or vertical support structures in the interior of the structures resistant to force. Strength resistant structures can be designed to withstand loads along the corrugation lines of the sheet material for strength, rigidity and integrity, including increased torsional strength and load bearing strength. The side wall fins and / or the wings can be arranged to provide vertical support completely around the perimeter of the strength resistant structures to resist deflection of the upper member base panels when clamped from a load on the legs. same. The inner support flaps can form vertical support structures of various configurations. The central interior support fins provide support vertical for the upper member base panels towards the center of the strength resistant structures, and the outer inner support fins provide vertical support for the upper member base panels towards the sides of the strength resistant structures. The upper and lower members can easily be manufactured and can be shipped and / or stored in the unfolded condition in which the upper and lower members occupy minimal space due to their flat or flat configuration. Force resistant structures can be disassembled or decomposed to return to the unfolded condition subsequent to use. Force-resistant structures are quickly and easily recyclable or disposable.
