종래의 자전거 분야는 그 종류가 다양하여 구체적으로 열거하기는 번거로우므로 대략 종류별로 본다면 일반적인 주행용과 경주용, 화물용 등이 있고 근래에널리 보급된 MTB(산악용 다단계 기어식 자전거)나 절첩식도 있어서 수요충족은 물론 아직도 성능개선을 목적으로 꾸준히 개발하고 있으므로 그보다 특출한 성능이나 기능을 갖추지 않고는 신제품의 출현이 어렵다 할 것이다. 다만 여기서 지적하고자 하는 것은 성능이나 기능이 아니라 취급(HANDLING)의 문제인 바, 종래의 모든 자전거는 성능과 기능을 우선으로 하여 설계되는 것이어서 각기 용도 상의 성능은 달성되지만 취급에 있어서 사용시간 이외에는 보관 상태라고 할 수 있으므로 이 보관상태에 문제가 있는 것이다. 즉 기능상 휴대할 수 있도록 할 수 없으니 어디에든 보관을 시켜야 하는데 전용보관장소가 있어도 빈번하게 절도사고가 발생한다든지 협소한 주거지에서는 방해물 취급을 받는 등 갈수록 수요에 비례하여 문제가 심각하여지는 것은 자명하다 할 것이다. 또한 기존의 절첩식 자전거도 어느정도 취급의 용이함은 있으나 제한적인 용도(주행전용)에 비하여 중량이나 부피가 과한 편이므로 위 문제와 별반 차이가 없다고 본다.Conventional bicycles have a variety of types, which are cumbersome to enumerate in detail, so when viewed by type, there are general driving, racing, cargo, and so on.
