Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent the deflection of the axial center and to produce the title preform free of cracks, etc., by heating a glass rod with the lower part supported through mechanical contact to remove the cracks, etc., and then depositing fine glass particles on the rod. CONSTITUTION:The glass rod 1 with the upper end supported by a rotary chuck 2 fixed to a lifting shaft is allowed to vertically pierce a reaction vessel 3 provided with a cleaning chamber 6 at the lower part, and the lower part of the glass rod 1 is supported by a mechanical supporting means 9 for preventing the whirling of the rod 1 and made freely rotatable and movable. The rod 1 is then rotated through the chuck 2, lifted up, introduced into the cleaning chamber 6, heated by a heating burner 7 to remove the cracks, contaminants, etc., on the surface, and introduced into the chamber 3. The fine glass particles synthesized from the synthesis gas supplied from a burner 4 in an oxyhydrogen flame are deposited on the surface of the rod 1, and a porous preform 10 is formed.
