Abstract

PURPOSE:To substitute Mn for a part of Ni and to inexpensively manufacture an alloy steel for chemical industry excellent in pitting corrosion resistance and stress corrosion cracking resistance, by incorporating specific amounts of N in an austenitic stainless steel used under a corrosive environment containing chlorides. CONSTITUTION:As a steel stock excellent in pitting corrosion resistance and stress corrosion cracking resistance for use in general chemical industry, an alloy steel such as austenitic stainless steel containing, by weight, <0.02% C, <1.0% Si, 6-16% Mn, 15-26% Ni, 18-24% Cr, 2-6% Mo, and 0.2-0.5% N is used. A part of expensive Ni as an austenite-forming element is substituted by inexpensive Mn to reduce costs and the resulting formation of low-corrosion- resistance sigma-phase is inhibited by the addition of N, by which the alloy steel excellent in strength can be manufactured without deteriorating pitting corrosion resistance and stress corrosion cracking resistance.
