Abstract

PURPOSE:To suppress an amount of a noxious exhaust gas component, diffused in the open air, to a minimum value, by a method wherein a plurality of linear air-fuel ratio sensors are disposed before and after a catalyst converter connected to the exhaust pipe of an engine, and monitors an exhaust gas state to discriminate deterioration of a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A catalyst converter 2 connected to an exhaust pipe 1 of an engine E, and linear air-fuel ratio sensors 3 and 4 are disposed on the upper stream side and the down stream side, respectively, of a catalyst converter 2. After detecting signals from the linear air-fuel ratio sensors 3 and 4 are shaped and amplified by signal processing means 5 and 6, respectively, the detecting signals are compared with each other by means of a trouble diagnosing means 7 to diagnose a trouble on the catalyst converter 2, and the trouble is converted into sound and light by means of a trouble alarming means 8 to alarm it to an operator. This constitution enables rapid detection of deterioration of performance of the catalyst converter 2, and suppression of an amount of a noxious gas component, diffused in the open air, to a minimum value.
