Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a recording medium which generates less recording errors and has excellent surface smoothness, sliding resistance and corrosion resistance by forming a magnetic layer of iron nitride directly on a glass substrate. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic layer 2 of the iron nitride such as Fe4N is formed directly on the glass substrate 1 and a protective layer 3 is provided thereon. Since this iron nitride has good adhesion, the glass substrate 1 having high hardness and surface smoothness can be used; therefore, the need for the conventional Ni-P plating layer is eliminated and the defects by the Ni-P film which occupy the majority of defects are eliminated and the recording errors can be decreased. Since the smoothness of the glass substrate 1 is high, the smoothness of the surface formed with the magnetic layer 2 and the protective layer 3 is improved as well. The iron nitride has the high adhesive power to the substrate 1 and the protective layer 3 and, therefore, the recording medium having the excellent sliding resistance is obtd.
