Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve nonlinear characteristics and to necessitate the operating voltage which is about the same as the operating voltage of an ordinary liquid crystal by using a ring diode consisting of two pieces of diodes formed with specific amorphous (a) layers as a switching element. CONSTITUTION:Plural picture element electrodes 3 arranged in a matrix shape are formed atop a glass substrate 1. Transparent electrodes 4 are formed in notched parts. Non-doped a-SiC layers 5, 5A, non-doped i type a-Si layers 6, 6A as well as n type a-Si layers 7, 7A are laminated and formed respectively on these electrodes 3 and electrodes 4 to constitute a- layers 8, 8A. Metallic electrodes 11, 11A are respectively formed on the layers 7, 7A. The diode 13 is thus formed of the electrode 3, the layer 8, and the electrode 11 and the diode 13A is formed of the electrode 4, the layer 8A, and the electrode 11A. The ring diode 14 is formed of the diodes 13, 13A. The forward and reverse operating voltage of this diode 14 is about the same as the operating voltage of the switching element and crosstalks are suppressed.
