PURPOSE:To miniaturize the device and to reduce the cost of a device by providing a heating wire resistance, a supply current control circuit, a mixing ratio calculation part, etc. CONSTITUTION:In a detecting device S, the bridge circuit consisting of a circuit C provided with a temperature compensating resistance 4 and a control circuit 6 supplies electric power so that the heating resistance 5 maintains invariably constant temperature. Then the current which flows in the circuit C varies as the fuel flowing in a fuel supply pat 3 absorbs heat generated by the resistance 5, so a computing element 2 calculates the heating value of the resistance 5 from the value of the current and calculates a fuel characteristic value from the heating value that the fuel absorbs as the calculated heating value of the resistance 5 because the heating value is equal to the heating value in the supply path 3. Further, this characteristic value is inputted to the mixing ratio calculation part 7 in the electronic control unit 7 of an engine to calculate the mixing ratio of alcohol and gasoline. Thus the device is miniaturized and the cost is reduced.
