Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain efficiently the title resin which has excellent gel strength and water-absorbing power and a high rate of water-absorption, by carrying out a reversed-phase suspension polymerization of an alkali metal acrylate, wherein a polymer having an OH-radical is used as a dispersant and a cross- linking monomer is added in the solvent phase of reversed-phase suspension polymerization. CONSTITUTION:A polymer having an OH-radical, which is a copolymer of 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate and an ester of methacrylic acid with a 4-18C alkyl alcohol, is added in an organic solvent such as cyclohexane as a dispersant, and further acrylic acid and/or alkali metal acrylate (e.g., acrylic acid and sodium acrylate) and distilled water are added to that suspension. Then, a solution of a cross-linking monomer, which is selected from among glycidyl methacrylate, methacrylic ester having an OH-radical, etc., in, e.g., cyclohexane is added to the aforementioned organic solvent serving as the solvent phase of reverse-phase suspension polymerization, and a reverse-phase suspension polymerization is carried out in the presence of a polymerization initiator. After the polymerization is finished, polymerized particles are separated and dried.
