PURPOSE:To prevent generation of a scanning distortion caused by a static or dynamic fall of an optical deflector, by providing a detector on a pre-scanning area before effective scanning of a laser beam, and feeding back a detecting signal to a modulator. CONSTITUTION:A laser beam oscillated from a laser oscillator 1 is sent to an acoustic and optical (AO) modulator through an optical system such as reflection mirrors 2, 3, a mask 4, etc., and in this modulator, optical modulation is executed in accordance with picture information BS. Subsequently, an optical signal on which a picture signal has been superposed is led onto a photosensitive drum 8 while being deflected by a rotary polyhedral mirror 6, and picture recording is executed. In this case, 2 photoelectric converting elements P1, P2 are placed in order in the sub-scanning direction in the pre-scanning area on the main sanning line of the laser beam to the photosensitive drum, a scanning distortion delta is detected by an output difference of each element, and in accordance with this result, the driving frequency of the AO modulator is varied, by which an angle of incidence of the laser beam to the optical deflector 6 is changed, and the distortion is corrected.
