Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for an organic solvent, medicine, etc. under mild conditions in high quality and yield, by adding an alkylene carbonate in a specific proportion to an alkylene oxide, and reacting the alkylene oxide with CO2 in the presence of a specified catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: An alkylene carbonate of formula I (R1, R2, R3 and R4 are H, alkyl, aryl, alkenyl or cycloalkyl) is reacted with carbon dioxide in the presence of an alkaline metallic halide to give the titled compound of formula II, e.g. ethylene carbonate or propylene carbonate. In the process, 50W500wt%, based on the compound of formula I, alkylene carbonate is added to carry out the reaction at a relatively low temperature and pressure in a short time. The compound is the same as the reaction product, and the separation and the purification after the completion of the reaction can be readily carried out. The method is industrially advantageous to the miniaturization of apparatuses, reduction of cost and simplification of the process.
