Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for, dye, pigment, durg, agricultural chemical, etc. advantageously with respect to energy, resources, equipment, and economic points, by sujecting 2,3-dimethylnitrobenzene to catalytic reduction with hydrogen in the presence of a specific catalyst in a specified solvent.
CONSTITUTION: Relatively cheap and readily obtainable 2,3-dimethylnitrobenzene as a raw material is subjected to catalytic reduction with hydrogen in the presence of a platinum-carbon catalyst in a sulfuric acid-alcohol solvent. The amount of the catalyst is preferably about 1W10wt% based on 2,3-dimethylnitrobenzene. methanol or ethanol is preferable as the alcohol comprising the sulfuric acid-alcohol solvent, its amount is about 5W20 times as much as that of the raw material compound, and the concentration of sulfuric acid in the solvent is 0.5W10 times as much as that of the raw material compound.
