Abstract
PURPOSE:To make the decrease in electrolytic cell voltage possible and to reduce manufacturing costs by providing gas and liquid permeable porous layers having no electrode activity on the surfaces of an ion exchange membrane, bringing an anode and a cathode in tight contact with the ion exchange membrane, and performing electrolysis. CONSTITUTION:A diaphragm 1 is constituted of conductive metallic plates 2, 3 on an anode side and a cathode side that can withstand the conditions of respective chambers. Both metallic plates have projecting parts 8, 9 disposed in different positions and are connected respectively to an anode 4 and a cathode 5 by means of conductive connecting members 10. An ion exchange membrane having gas and liquid permeable porous layers having no electrode activity on the surfaces of said membrane is disposed between the anode 4 of the diaphragm 1 and an adjacent diaphragm 2. In this way, the anode 4, the ion exchange membrane and the cathode 5 are so assembled that they contact each other perfectly or the anode 4, the ion exchange membrane and the cathode 5 are brought into contact with each other by allowing the anode 4 and the cathode 5 to gnaw each other like a liner system.
