Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the simple, efficient and stable photoswitch by inserting a matching agent in space and let light be emitted to an output optical fiber in the photoswitch which emits light through the total reflection by the space created by the mutually opposing slopes of the input- and output optical fibers on a straight line. CONSTITUTION:The obliquely polished planes of an input optical fiber 1 and an output optical fiber 3 form space 4. When refractive indices of optical fibers 1, 3 are, for example, 1.46 and theta is <=46.7 deg., the perfect reflection occurs on the slopes when optical fibers are in air. Now, if the theta is denoted as 45 deg., the light incident from the optical fiber 1 emits in the optical fiber 2 in the right-angle direction. If a matching agent is put in the space 4, the light emits in the optical fiber 3. A similar photoswitch is obtainable by forming the space 4 by way of rod lenses 5 and prisms 6. In this way, the simple, efficient and stable photoswitch is obtained.
