Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a glass sheet with very superior flexiblity by applying an ion exchange method to modify the surface of a glass sheet of a predetermined thickness or below.
CONSTITUTION: A ≤200, especially 50W120μ thick amorphous glass film, e.g., consisting of, by mol, 33W90% SiO2, 1W30% Al2O3 and 9W40% Na2O is provided with flexibility as follows: monovalent cations such as Na+ and/or Li+ are replaced with cations larger than the monovalent cations in ionic radius up to the 4W 35, especially 10W20% depth of the film thickness. Na+ is replaced with K+, and Li+ with Na+ and/or K+. Thus, a flexible glass film is obtd. This film contains cations of larger ionic radius at higher concn. and replaced ions at lower concn. up to the 2W18, especially 7W12% depth of the film thickness from the surface on the basis of half-width.
