Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound which is an intermediate for preparing polyurethane in high conversion and yield, by reacting a carbanilate with HCHO in the presence of a specific catalyst in an aliphatic carboxylic acid and an anhydride thereof as at least one component of a solvent.
CONSTITUTION: A carbanilate expressed by formula I (R is 1W4C alkyl or phenyl; X, Y and Z are H, halogen, nitro, etc.), e.g. methyl carbanilate or ethyl carbanilate, is reacted with HCHO in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. a heterpolymolybdic acid such as H3Mo12PO40 or H4Mo12TiO40, or a heteropolytungstic acis such as H3W12 PO40 or H4W12SiO40, to give the titled compound. In the case of the ethyl carbanilate used, the compounds expressed by formulas IIWV are obtained. The yield of the compound expressed by formula I or II is improved by circulating the component expressed by formulas IV and V through the reaction system.
