Abstract

PURPOSE: To remove isobutylene completely from a hydrocarbon mixture containing butene-1 and a slight amount of isobutylene, by reacting the mixture with methanol using a specific strongly acidic cation exchange resin as a catalyst under specific conditions in a liquid-phase fixed bed reactor.
CONSTITUTION: A hydrocarbon mixture containing butene-1 and ≤5wt% of isobutylene is made to react with methanol using a macroporous strongly acidic cation exchange resin as a catalyst at 30W70°C under a pressure sufficiently high to keep the hydrocarbon liquid, and at a methanol concentration of ≤5wt%, in a liquid- phase fixed bed reactor. The process enables the conversion of isobutylene to tert- butyl methyl, ether, which can be removed completely and economically from the hydrocarbon mixture. After the removal of the isobutylene, the mixture is distilled to separate high purity butene-1 useful as a modifier of polyolefins.
