Abstract
PURPOSE: To enable accurate axial alignment and connection as well as the grasping of the relative positions of respective cores to be done by forming a void within a glass rod having plural mutually paralleled cores, and crushing this void, thereby forming a concave part on the outside circumference of the glass rod.
CONSTITUTION: A glass rod 1 having plural mutually paralleled cores 2a, 2b...2g is reduced to a desired small diameter in its inside longitudinal direction. This glass rod 1 is made into an optical transmission body by the working means illustrated. The pipe 8 of a vacuum sucking machine 7 is connected to one end of the glass rod 1 by a connecting tool 9 and the other end of the glass rod 1 is metled, whereby one end of a void 3 is sealed. After this, the heater 10 of a cylinder type insertionally adapted to the outside circumference of the glass rod 1 is moved in its longitudinal direction to heat the glass rod 1 to about 1,300W1,500°C to soften, and while doing this, the inside of the void 3 is evacuated by the vacuum sucking machine 7 to crush the void 3 by the synergistic action of this heating and evacuating, whereby the outside circumference of the glass rod 1 is formed with a concave part 11.
