Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the viscosity of a high viscous aqueous dispersion without losing the stability and improve the workability in coating use by blowing carbon dioxide gas into an aqueous dispersion of an olefin.unsaturated carboxylic acid metal salt copolymer.
CONSTITUTION: About above 50mol%, preferably, 75W90mol% of olefin such as ethylene, propylene, 1-butene, 1-hexene or the like and about 25W10mol% of metal salt of an unsaturated carboxylic acid such as acrylic acid, maleic acid, itaconic acid or the like are subjected to graft copolymerization or random copolymerization to obtain a copolymer. This copolymer is thrown into water maintained at above m.p. of the said copolymer and sufficiently stirred to produce an aqueous dispersion, thereafter carbon dioxide gas or a mixed gas of carbon dioxide and other inert gas is blown into the said dispersion at above 5W50°C. Thereby, the viscosity of a high viscous aqueous dispersion of an olefin.unsaturated carboxylic acid metal salt copolymer is reduced.
