Abstract
PURPOSE: To improve the performance and life of a fuel cell by constituting same such that one electrode opposite to the other electrode at which water is formed by reaction is cooled to prevent condensed water from appearing on and around the one electrode.
CONSTITUTION: Except with an outermost electrode, a fuel cell has a pair of oxygen electrodes 1, 1' belonging to a common oxygen gas chamber 2 and a pair of hydrogen electrodes 3, 3' belonging to a common hydrogen gas chamber 4. An electrolyte chamber 5 is formed between the oxygen electrodes 1, 1' and the hydrogen electrodes 3, 3'. In the cell, when 30% KOH electrolyte is used, water is produced at the hydrogen electrodes 3, 3' by reaction. Accordingly, a cooling pipe 6 is provided within the oxygen gas chamber 2 of this cell, and cooling water is flowed through the cooling pipe 6 to cool the oxygen electrodes 1, 1'. On the other hand, if electrolyte consists of acidic solution such as of sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and the like, water is produced by reaction at the oxygen electrodes. In this case, therefore, a cooling pipe is provided within a hydrogen gas chamber.
