Abstract

PURPOSE:To make a permanent magnet of high performance and low cost from an alloy of prescribed composition in which Ce and Sm are jointly used, while a portion of Co is substituted by Fe and Zr and/or Ti is added. CONSTITUTION:Ce and Sm are jointly used, a portion of Co is substituted by Fe for heightening the residual magnetic flux density and Zr and/or Ti is added, thereby producing an alloy powder represented as Ce1-uSmu(Co1-x-y-wCuxFeyZrw)z where 0.05<=u<0.5, 0.09<=x<=0.14, 0.05<=y<=0.25, 0.03<=w<=0.0015 and 5.8<=z<= 6.8. A shaped piece of the alloy powder is sintered at 1100-1200 deg.C. The piece is then cooled from 1100 deg.C to 600 deg.C in 5-50 minutes. The sintered piece kept at 400-650 deg.C is cooled to 300 deg.C in 2 hours or more. This temperature treatment is effected under vacuum or inert gas. According to this method, a sufficient coercive force and a rectangular square characteristic curve are assured, a homogeneous magnet of excellent properties is produced without scattering in quality and a material alloy of about 50kg can be processed as one lot.
