Abstract
PURPOSE: To improve engine starting performance and to keep stable combustion even during high-load operation of engine, by forming a port through which fuel injected into subsidiary combustion chamber from fuel injection valve is passed directly into main combustion chamber, and shaping the port such that its sectional area is increased gradually from the side of main combusion chamber toward the subsidiary chamber.
CONSTITUTION: Subsidiary combustion chamber 9 is arranged such that a portion of fuel (b) injected from fuel injection valve 7 located in chamber 9 is supplied via connecting port 6 directly into main combustion chamber 4. The port 6 is formed at the bottom of base metal 5 in the manner that its sectional area is large on the side of subsidiary combustion chamber 9 and small on the side of main combustion chamber 4. With such an arrangement, fuel (b) is supplied via connecting port 6 directly into main combustion chamber 4 in which temperature and pressure of air are both high, so that ignition of mixture is caused with ease. Further, since connecting port 6 is restricted on the side of main combustion chamber 4, high-temperature uncombusted gas is mixed vigorously with air in combustion chamber 4, so that mixture can be combusted in stable manner at the time of high- load operation of engine.
