Abstract

PURPOSE: A phase transitional liquid crystal composition transitionable by static- drive electric field application from cholesteric to nematic phase consists of a positive dielectric anisotropic nematic liquid crystal, optical active substance, and 4'-substituted phenyl-4-substituted cyclohexyl carboxylate.
CONSTITUTION: A phase transition composition consists of a) positive dielectric anisotropic nematic liquid crystal (e.g. 4-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl or other biphenyl liquid crystal), b) optical active substance (e.g. chiral nematic compound), and a compound of formula I (e.g.4'-cyanophenl-4-propyl cyclohexyl carboxylate). Preferably, two or more of components a)are mixed in composition, in less than 50 wt% particularly for non-memory characteristic. A ratio of component b) depends on pitch control of chorestric state liquid crystal, but in general, 0.5 to 20 wt% is preferable. (wherein, R is C1-8 alkyl, alcoxy; H is a cyclohexane ring ; X is cyano, nitro group, halogen, C1-8 alkyl, alcoxy group.)
