Abstract
Monocarboxylic acids, obtained by the reaction of formic acid, or of carbon monoxide and water, either with alkanes in the presence of hydrogen acceptors or with alkenes, are purified by contacting with sulphuric acid of at least 90% by weight concentration, at preferably 10 DEG to 50 DEG C. and preferably in an amount between 0.1% and 10% by volume, and subsequently separating the sulphuric acid phase therefrom and optionally washing the raffinate with water or aqueous solutions of alkali or alkaline earth metal citrates, hydroxides, carbonates or bicarbonates. The carboxylic acid is preferably made in the presence of a catalyst of boron trifluoride and water and optionally also phosphoric acid. The thus purified product may then be distilled. In the example, wherein the synthesis of the crude acid from olefins, and carbon monoxide over a H3PO4, BF3, H2O catalyst mixture is described, the storage properties, colour and nickel content of refined and crude acids are compared. Specification 871,278 is referred to.
