Abstract

998,063. Extruding polymers; melt spinning. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. Feb. 12, 1964 [Feb. 18, 1963], No. 6538/63. Headings B5A and B5B. Fusible polymers are formed into filaments, films, tubing &c. by extrusion while molten, through a screw extruder maintained at a suitable temperature, in which they are continually kneaded, the polymers passing through a vacuum degassing zone, in which volatile matter is continually removed through a vent port to regulate the relative viscosity, then through a superatmospheric pressure zone and finally out through the shaping means, e.g. a die or spinneret, the pressure in the pressure zone being continually measured and the polymer feed rate to the extruder and the extruder screw speed, both being continually regulated in proportion to said pressure to maintain the pressure constant. Suitable polymers include nylons (polyamides), polyesters (e.g. polyethylene terephthalate), olefins (e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene), vinylons (e.g. polyvinyl chloride), polymethyl methacrylate, cellulose acetate, polyxoymethylene polymers and co-polymers and mixtures of the polymers. Additives such as anti-oxidants, antistatic agents, stabilizers, colouring agents, filament surface rougheners, fillers, dye assistants, plasticizers and lubricants may be added through inlet ports upstream of the vacuum zone. The polymer is fed by pneumatic conveyer 2 from drum 1 to hopper 3 and into the inlet of the twin screw conveyer 4 in which it is intensively kneaded and passed through a vacuum zone created by steam jets 5, the volatiles passing out through parts 6, 7, 8, thus effectively regulating the relative viscosity of the polymer which then passes through a superatmospheric pressure zone to the transfer line 9 and spinneret 10 (or die). Pressure detector 13 measures the pressure in the superatmospheric zone and deviations from the preset value are transmitted from pressure regulator 15 to screw speed regulator 18 and feed speed regulator 17 to act to restore the pressure to its correct value. A further control over the extrusion conditions may be provided by measuring the pressure at a spinning block pump at the spinneret 10 and adjusting the degree of vacuum in the vacuum zone by suitable control means such that the differential pressure between the pressure zone and the spinning block pump is maintained constant.
