994,887. Starter drives. FABRICA ESPANOLA MAGNETOS S.A. Nov. 20, 1961 [May 12, 1961; Sept. 29, 1961], No. 41440/61. Heading F1K. A starting motor drive for an internalcombustion engine comprises a first driven member to be driven by the electric motor and drivably connected to the first driven member through a reduction gear and a free wheel clutch a second driven member providing a pinion to mesh with the ring gear of the engine, the free wheel of the clutch acting to transmit drive to the second driven member from the first driven member but not from the second driven member to the first driven member so that no drive from the ring gear can be imparted to the electric motor. In Fig. 1 the reference 1 designates an electromagnet which while it is causing the pinion 2 to advance by means of a fork 3, also operates a member which connects the battery to the starter motor. Flow of current to the motor is prevented until the pinion 2 is in mesh with the gear of the engine. An epicyclic gear shaft 10 carries three planetary gears 17. A stationary gear ring 12 for the epicyclic gear meshes with the planetary gears 17 and on an armature 13 of the motor is provided a sun pinion of the epicyclic gear. In Fig. 2 when current is supplied to the electromagnet a magnetic field is created which impels the core 22 forward consequently pushing the rod 24 which acts in turn on the pinion shaft 29 and shifts the pinion into engagement with the engine gear. The disc 25 connects the battery terminal 26 to the contacts 27 connected to the brush yokes 28. The drive includes an epicyclic gear and the free wheel clutch 18.
