Abstract

993,291. Pharmaceutical tablets. T. L. COOPER. Dec. 6, 1962 [Dec. 6, 1961], No. 46164/62. Heading A5B. A fracturable article in the form of a pill, pellet and especially a tablet, having top and bottom surfaces is provided with a concavity in at least one of said surfaces and a breaking groove formed in said concavity whereby, upon application of downward pressure to the other of said surfaces, the article will fracture along said groove. The groove may be replaced by a zone of more frangible material than the material of the tablet &c., i.e. a zone of weakness. The zone of weakness may extend diametrically across the apex of the concavity, the walls of which are inclined upwardly to merge into the zone of weakness at their upper ends (Fig. 1) and, in a modification, may also be formed at their lower ends into a perimetral support for the article (Fig. 3). The top surface may be planar or convex. The top and bottom surfaces may each have a concavity containing a zone of weakness whereby the article may be broken into at least four fractions. Conveniently, the zone of weakness and concavity of the top surface is oriented substantially 90 degrees from the zone of weakness and concavity of the bottom surface (Figs. 9 and 10). Such a tablet may be provided with outwardly directed bevelled surfaces adjacent the perimeter of the concavity in both top and bottom surfaces (Figs. 12 and 13). The tablets may be of circular, elliptical or rectangular outline. They may be used for the administration of steroids, anticoagulants, diuretics, anti-diabetic drugs, anti-hypertensives and aspirins.
