Abstract
990,308. Hair curlers. LAUGHTON & SONS Ltd. April 15, 1964 [April 18, 1963], No. 15249/63. Heading A4V. A hair curler comprises an open coil helical spring 4 and, around the spring, a reticulated sheath 5 of heat-shrinkable, tubular, extruded polypropylene net, the ends of the sheath being closed over the ends of the spring by locally heating the ends of the sheath to cause their material to contract. The spring is inserted by hand into the sheath, which projects at both ends, and the assembly placed on a toothed conveyer, with the ends of the sheath overhanging, and taken past heated metal plates 8 of gas or electrically heated furnaces 7. The surface temperature of the plates increases in the direction of movement of the conveyer and the net is plasticised just before it moves behind an asbestos mask 10. In contracting, the free ends of the net become interwoven and welded, to retain the coil.
